While some of us in the office cling to all that remains of summer (hi Elyssa), there are others who are more than ready for the cooler weather. A chance to bring ‘cosy’ back into the conversation. As the leaves begin to brown and the audible crunch on the footpath a welcome friend, we’ve been talking about taking a trip.

If you have been wanting a break of what 2025 has offered up, we’re with you. Furthermore, if you’re still pondering on where to go or what to pack this season, may we inspire you to book the leave and get your suitcase ready. Here is what the RUSSH editors are packing for a autumn getaway, and where we’re going.

I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve lived in Sydney for two years now and have yet to drive outside the city’s boundaries to visit any of the Blue Mountains or Hunter Valley regions. Now that the heat has mellowed, I’d love to take a weekend trip out to a little BnB somewhere – even coastally, I’ve had Il Delfino in Yamba on my list for ages. I like to travel light, so my go-tos would be my new trusty Lululemon City Adventurer Duffle Bag (truly the perfect size for a weekend trip), a REALLY good knit like this Scanlan Theodore Cashmere Cardigan (although I’m also eyeing off the very respectably priced Cashmere Cardigans in the new UNIQLO: C collection). And because I love to cook I am the type to bring along a great all-purpose pot for dinners – and the Le Creuset Oval Casserole is portable and beautiful. Of course the other great love of my life is reading, and Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar and the soon-to-be released Nova Scotia House by Charlie Porter are both high on my list at the moment. And finally, an Aesop Protective Lip Balm SPF30 is a must.

I am heading over to New Zealand for a friend’s wedding in a few weeks and have decided to extend my trip to a full week exploring Wanaka and the beautiful south island. Packing wise that means I need a little bit of everything.

Firstly, a wedding outfit and I’m currently deciding between two options both from Hansen & Gretel – this gorgeous blush coloured maxi dress which feels very wedding appropriate, or a shorter red version which I’m much more likely to wear again. For either option I’m thinking these black Marni clogs to edge it up a bit, and a black blazer for when it gets cooler at night.

This is my first trip to Wanaka which means hiking is a must. I’ve been wearing Salomons for years and I love how light they are. Whilst I’ve traditionally always gone for a black pair, I’m seriously tempted to invest in something fun like this pink and purple pair. I also swear by The Upside leggings and my Patagonia backpack which also doubles as hand luggage as it has a removable laptop case.

Last but not least, casual wear and I can’t go past a really versatile pair of jeans like these black Camilla and Marc ones. I’ll also be throwing in a cardigan and some warm socks for colder nights.

A few years ago, I visited Tasmania for the first time to stay at the beautiful Stillwater in Launceston. Since then, I’ve always wanted to go back, but this time, bring my husband and kids along for the adventure. We won’t be making it down this Autumn sadly, but if we were, I’d be packing a cosy cashmere knit (this one by COS looks like the perfect shape), a cropped trench for day to night dressing (I love this, by Camilla & Marc) and an easy pair of denim, like this high waisted style from Henne. Other essentials I’d be packing include my trusty Lesse lip balm to keep lips hydrated during a day out and about, and the new Augustinus Bader eye cream, for a little moment of self care in the evenings. I always take a book with me when I’m travelling, and right now it’s Griffin Dunne’s memoir, The Friday Afternoon Club. Lastly, I’d be travelling with everything folded away in the new Samsonite Streamlite carry-on. I love the heritage design modelled on one of their original 1940s cases, while being effortlessly light and practical for the modern traveller on the go.

In what can only be described as divine timing, I just opened an email with Esse Studios’ new collection. I have never clicked a link faster than I did when I saw this trench. It’s perfect for an Autumn getaway, if I do say so myself. For the actual getaway part, I have nothing concrete planned, but I do always spend Easter at home in Port Stephens, with a pit stop in the Hunter Valley to procure wine and cheese. I love the highlands, too. My favourite pub in NSW might just be the Burrawang Village Hotel. As for other packing essentials, it’s got to be Uniqlo track pants, this Polo Ralph Lauren hat, my forever favourite Christophe Robin hair mask to wear fireside — in aforementioned track pants — and some P Johnson cashmere for good measure.

Autumn for me means regular trips to my spiritual home town, Jindabyne and the surrounding Snowy Mountains. Having spent most of my childhood going down for Easter, it is the only place I crave to be when the mornings start to get chilly. If I’m heading there, I’m packing for cooler weather than Sydney allows (which is my favourite). A very good coat is required, and this Harris Tapper beauty is perfect for the cool that can only come from the Australian Alps. To get into the country feeling, my RM Williams always come with, and this Gucci bag wouldn’t go astray.

At this time of year, I love to go for walks around the national parks and Lake Jindabyne, and my sturdy yet cool Salomons come in handy as they are also water proof and allow me to step with confidence on the muddy paths. And of course, once all the hard work is done, it’s time for a butterscotch schnapps-infused hot chocolate by the fire from Wild Brumby Distillery. This of course means I need to tap into my ultimate European chalet girl with a big scarf and fluffy warm hat. Name a better way to spend an afternoon than outside in the cool Autumn air sipping a hot choccy!

What the 'RUSSH' editors are packing for an Autumn getaway. As we enter the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, I’m keen to leave the hedonism of summer for some focus and quiet(ish) moments. Having recently visited a friend’s heavenly cottage in Bodalla, I am now in love with the place and would happily start dairy farming down there. However, with my partner touring, I may join him for a little get away to Newcastle, where I have still yet to visit, especially if I can duck into The Crystalbrook Kingsley, a girl can dream.

There is a popular theory that a trip is an excuse for a new bag, in which case I just adore this Grocer Tote and could fill it with so many delightful trip treats. All good packs start with underwear, I’d love these by Paire for the day and this Kiki De Montparnasse set for the evening. I love an excuse to layer shirts, so some  silk turtlenecks to put under my prized band shirts would be handy. I love the cut of this Miu Miu Blazer and feel it would add great versatility to a small travel wardrobe. My beauty routine is pretty low maintenance, especially when travelling but naturally I’m taking my SPF Mineral Face Créme (SPF 50 all year round, it’s non negotiable) and some hair serum for my poor bleached ends. Obviously, as per usual, I’m taking a moleskin in the hope inspiration strikes, and a bottle of Ségla to encourage said inspiration to strike…

I’m still desperate to find the time to get to the Barossa Valley. The pictures look amazing and I’ve heard it’s some of the best wine tasting in all of Australia. And, I really, really want to stay at the Kingsford, it’s on my bucket list. Obviously the cool weather calls for a cosy coat, and I love this checked one from THE ICONIC. I found the perfect pair of Levis jeans with a relaxed 90s fit, so they’ll have to come too. As my search for the perfect flat boot continues, I adore this pair from Tony Bianco. They seem almost too good to be true. As for beauty, I would never go anywhere chilly without my Avene Cicalfate or my cold-girl beauty routine – this Flavedo cream blush and lip liner in Chinotto combo.
