What I packed for an autumn river cruise in Spain and Portugal may seem excessive but, you do know that I’ve never claimed to be a minimalist packer. I am a considered packer.
I always follow my own guidelines for packing for any destination. And I always like to have fun with what I pack to wear when at that destination.
When I knew I’d be heading to Spain and Portugal for work with APT*, I set to work creating a capsule travel wardrobe to suit the temperatures and activities I’d be doing.
In terms of temperatures, I track the destinations via the weather app right up to the day that I leave. While weather can change while you’re away, doing this really does give you a sense of the types of temperatures you will probably experience.
For this trip, I was able to see that the beginning would be colder before it warmed up towards the end. I was also able to see that while the day time temperatures might reach the early 20s, the evenings were colder and often it didn’t warm up in the day until mid-afternoon. This helped me to make sure I packed clothing pieces and layers to suit.
While October in Europe can be cold in some parts, in the southern countries the seasons take a little longer to change and it can vary dramatically in any one week. Mostly it felt like a Queensland winter, so a really comfortable time to travel.
In terms of activities, I was on a river cruise (more to come about that!). There were daily on-shore tours and experiences as well as nightly dinners on board the ship. I needed a mix of smart casual and comfortable as well as a couple of dressier options for a couple of the dinners.
To create this autumn travel capsule, I leant into the current European autumn trends – neutrals popped with leopard print and burgundy. Deciding on this helped me to minimise what I packed, knowing most things would work back with each other.

There are some key pieces that proved invaluable in this capsule for their versatility across a number of outfits: a black blazer, ponte pants, t-shirts, puffer jacket, sneakers and slides. Others earned their suitcase real estate because they added a little something something to one or two outfits.
