Well rested: Seven of our favourite sleep sprays and oils

Reaching adulthood definitely comes with a few realisations. Though there have been plenty of learning curves, my key takeaway so far is if I don’t get a good night’s rest, I’ll be completely useless the next day.

It’s to the point where I’m almost tyrannical about it. I’ll mentally calculate what time I need to go to bed to guarantee a minimum of eight hours each night, even if it means leaving an event early or skipping out on the latest episode of Severance.

Getting enough sleep is a fairly universal requirement for improving your mental and physical health. It aids in physical recovery, helps you concentrate and improves your moods, while a lack of sleep (anything less than seven to nine hours) can cause fatigue poor memory and impaired judgement.

Perhaps I’m at the point where I’ve created a placebo and conditioned myself, but as soon as I get a whiff of my favourite sleep spray or lavender oil, I feel my self slowly relaxing. Over time, I’ve built up a solid sleep routine that helps me calm my mind, unwind from the day and settle into a deep sleep. Alongside a chamomile tea (a non-negotiable) and a guided meditation, these are the sleep sprays and oils I swear by.

My longest relationship with a sleep spray is the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, I’ve been buying it for years. Made with natural essential oils, including lavender, vetiver and wild chamomile, it has a gentle and calming fragrance. I spray it on my bedding a few minutes before jumping in, giving it a chance to settle.

Kit Good Night Balm

We received the Kit Good Night Balm as part of a package delivered to the office a few months ago and I nabbed this straight away. Granted, it’s a balm (rather than a spray or oil) but it functions in the same way. It carries a rich, creamy scent and applying it post-shower and pre-bed is a nice wind-down ritual.

Sheet Society Bed Spray

Where most sleep sprays carry a strong lavender smell, I love the Sheet Society Bed Spray for its fresh, linen and sandalwood scent. It’s light and one spray is usually enough for your entire bedroom to turn into a sweet, sleepy oasis.

Generic Lavender Oil

If I had to choose one surefire way to drift off, it would be a small drop of lavender oil underneath my pillow. I currently use one gifted to me from my grandma from Portugal (because, of course, she gets it), but I’ve cycled in and out of generic oils from the chemist in the past. You can also opt to add a few drops (mixed in with water) to your oil burner before bed.

This Functional Fragrance Unwind roll-on was another office freebie that I grabbed as soon as I had the chance. It has a gentle, lavender-infused smell and I usually keep mine on my bedside table and apply it to any pressure points while taking a few deep breaths.

I was gifted the Ren Clean Skincare And Now To Sleep Pillow Spray for my birthday last year and it’s since found a place in my rotation. Made with a blend of frankincense, hops and lavender, you can spray it on your pyjamas, bedding or even on your couch cushions to help wind down before going to sleep.

The In Essence Sleep Essential Oil Roll On is a small, compact oil that you can easily pop in your bag or take with you while travelling. A rich blend of lavender, mandarin, Roman chamomile and valerian, you can apply it to your pulse points throughout the day to help ease stress or dab it on your travel pillow to drown out that potent plane smell.
