I’m a notoriously nosy person when it comes to beauty. I want to know whether you double cleanse at night, how often you wash your hair, and exactly what brand of tweezers you’re using. I want to know what curl definer you always repurchase and which lip balm you swear by.
In short, I adore products. This is why I’ve asked some of our favourite Australian beauty experts to share the ‘top three’ items in their kit. The scope is broad – it can genuinely be anything, as long as they’re the three they value the most.

Joining us this week is Sydney-based makeup artist Alana Lucky. If you’ve picked up a copy of the latest print edition of Fashion Journal, then you’ve seen Alana’s work before. Gracing the cover of Issue 197, the makeup on our cover was brought to life by Alana for the shoot, Inflation. Featuring vibrant silver eyeshadows and sharp, thin brows, Alana is known for her ability to create a naturally fresh complexion and bring it to life with a bold eye look.
Having worked in the industry for over a decade across Sydney, London and New York, some of Alana’s favourite shoots (aside from FJ, of course) have involved working with musicians. “I recently worked with Kesha, who was so fab,” she says. “I love to meet people whose music has influenced my life.” Given her wealth of experience, we were curious to know which beauty products rank as Alana’s top three.
Product one: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream

How did you first discover this product?
I went to a makeup by Mario masterclass, and he used it, and I fell in love.
Why does it do and why do you love it?
It’s a multipurpose balm. I use it for everything! Lips, eyelids, top of the cheekbone (sparingly as not to disturb the makeup underneath). In a pinch, I’ve even used it as body makeup to create shine on the décolletage.
Who would you recommend it to?
I believe you can get it at Chemist Warehouse these days! But online, I’m sure. It’s the perfect staple for everyone, pro or not.
Product two: Cloud Nine Redefine Beauty Device

How did you first discover this product?
It was a gift from a sponsor one year at Fashion Week.
Why does it do and why do you love it?
It’s essentially a Gua Sha tool with red, blue and purple light. The red light warms the device which is amazing for lymphatic drainage, the blue light cools the device which helps with depuffing and feels incredible. The purple light has a micro-current which tightens and tones the skin. Every client I use it on loves it.
Who would you recommend it to?
Hairhouse, Shaver Shop, Sephora and other online retailers stock it. I’d recommend it to a professional makeup artist who wants that extra touch of luxury for their prep routine or to someone who really loves skin care. It’s an all-in-one tool and I think it’s the best on the market.
Product three: By Terry Brightening CC Serum

How did you first discover this product?
I was very kindly gifted it.
Why does it do and why do you love it?
It’s a lightweight bronzing illuminator. It creates the most incredible sun-kissed skin. It’s become a staple in my kit for that no makeup, makeup look that has a whisper of a glow. Plus you can mix it with your foundation for a different finish.
Who would you recommend it to?
For the glowy, bronzed, light makeup lover. It smells of roses so to me that’s another big selling point. You can get it at Mecca.
Keep up with Alana here.
