The FJ team tried the ‘Sandwich Method’ styling challenge

I’m the perfect target audience for any social media styling hacks. I get easily overwhelmed by the sight of my wardrobe, leaving myself with zero time in the mornings to get ready. I know I’m too comfortable in neutrals and oversized silhouettes, so when I scroll through any styling advice on TikTok, I hit save.

Recently, I came across the ‘Sandwich Method‘. According to user Julie Macaluso, whose soundbite describing it has gone viral, you’re meant to start with any top and pair it with bottoms that have a totally different texture, silhouette, colour or vibe. Next, pick shoes that go with the top and finish the look off with accessories.

It’s fairly straightforward, to the point where you might already be doing it without realising. But as someone who jumps at the chance for some sartorial motivation, it felt like the perfect challenge to try out (and force the team into taking part as well).

At first, I thought, this challenge was going to be tricky but then looking at my wardrobe I realised I implement the sandwich method fairly regularly in my standard day to day uniform. In my personal style I gravitate towards red tones paired with more core colours. For this day I wore my Kowtow black dress which during summer I wear at least three times a week, my LMS cherry red ballet flats and my Henne red knit around my shoulders.

For my outfit, I paired a Deiji Studios one-shoulder top with a brown pair of what are technically pyjama pants that I was gifted from Hommey. I added some beige sandals to match the top and a patterned Ganni bag from Swop that sort of but didn’t really go with anything.

I like the idea of experimenting with tops and bottoms that don’t match – whether it’s in texture, colour or formality. It helped shake me out of my clothing rut and rediscover pieces that I’d otherwise neglected.

I felt uninspired this morning when sandwiching, so went for my tried-and-true office formula: a business shirt and office-appropriate flats. Normally I’d pair these with a pair of tailored slacks (shout out to my favourite, E Nolan), but I wanted to shake things up ever so slightly. I couldn’t quite bring myself to wear tracksuit pants to work, so I grabbed this pair of Levi’s instead. It’s nothing groundbreaking as far as outfits go, but it had me thinking twice and reaching for something different.

To be honest, I found the clothing sandwich challenge kind of confusing… it felt like getting dressed normally. I think I might already be clothes sandwiching without realising. For my outfit today, I mixed preppy pieces with something sporty and casual.

I started with my black button-up cardigan by Twenty-Seven Names, and some black leather loafers – so far, so sophisticated. These green Adidas track pants were the curveball, then I accessorised with my usual leather bag by Sonia Rykiel to tie the look together. It’s a look I wouldn’t typically wear to work but I will more often!
