If there’s one thing I will never say no to, it’s a run to Chemist Warehouse. There’s one near our office, and nine times out of ten if one of the Fashion Journal girls has to duck in, I’ll happily tag along. More often than not, there’ll be something I could do with topping up.

Whether it’s a fresh tube of mascara, an eyebrow gel or skincare, it’s rarely the kind of pit stop that breaks the bank. While I’m partial to spending a small fortune on retinol or Vitamin C oil, it pays to balance out those big-ticket items with a few budget-friendly options. Below, we share the Chemist beauty products we have on auto-buy.
Maybelline Super Lock Brow Glue Clear Eyebrow Gel

Picked by: Giulia Brugliera, Fashion Journal’s Managing Editor
I love having my brows laminated but am finding it tricky to justify it with the cost of living right now, so I’ve been experimenting with brow gels, waxes and pomades to get them to hold. Most have worked short-term but my brows tend to return to their rightful place within hours.
Maybelline’s Super Lock Brow Glue has been different. It’s the only product I’ve tried that holds my brows in place right up until it’s washed off. It’s even kept my brows in place overnight. You do need to use it carefully, as it can dry a little ‘flaky’ if you overdo it, but it’s easily the best brow product I’ve used. It’s saved me hundreds in brow laminations already.

Garnier Body Superfood Cocoa & Ceramide Nourishing Cream
Picked by: Molly Griffin, Fashion Journal’s Advertising and Partnerships Manager
My best friend put me on this and it’s the ultimate moisturiser – it’s just so thick and creamy. The scent is really nice and lingers to a point where my partner has said that it’s the smell he most associates me with (rather than my very expensive perfume!). Plus, at $15 a jar, it’ll last you months.

Marvis Jasmine Mint Toothpaste

I know this article is meant to be about budget beauty. Is it responsible to regularly spend $15 on fashionable toothpaste? No. Does it bring me joy to see the chic tube in my bathroom every day? Yes.

Cetaphil Intensive Moisturising Cream
Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor
I get hit with bad bouts of eczema every now and then, mostly on my hands. Cetaphil is generally great for sensitive skin and I always get this trusty old moisturiser out when my hands are feeling particularly dry and flaring up. I’ve been using it for years and find it calms my skin in just a couple of days.

Maybelline Lifter Hydrating Longwear Lip Liner
Picked by: Molly Griffin, Fashion Journal’s Advertising and Partnerships Manager
This is my favourite lip liner and inexpensive enough that I can afford to have one in multiple handbags. The consistency is very hydrating and smooth to apply, and the colour is subtle enough that it seamlessly blends with various similar lipstick shades.

Dermal Therapy Tinted Lip Balm Rose Pink

Picked by: Daisy Henry, Fashion Journal’s Assistant Editor
I’m a lip balm fiend. I have one dutifully on my bedside table, in my kitchen, at my desk, in my car and in various bags. There is nothing that gets me like dry lips! I came across this one by Dermal Therapy only a few months ago and haven’t stopped talking about it since. It’s only nine dollars and the tinted pink shade always gets me compliments.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Niacinamide Serum
Picked by: Lara Daly, Fashion Journal’s Features Editor
I’m on my fourth bottle of this, my skin loves it. I discovered it on a shoot when I had to film a skincare tutorial, and after applying it to my skin over and over again for the course of three hours, my skin felt so good I just kept using it in place of my usual (expensive) K-Beauty serum.
The texture is really hydrating but never sticky. It’s also fragrance-free and layers underneath other products well. Whenever my skin breaks out from testing new products, I switch back to using just this and it settles it down. You can usually find it for around $20 from the chemist or supermarket

People All-in-One Leave-in Treatment
Picked by: Giulia Brugliera, Fashion Journal’s Managing Editor
This hair treatment is not a chemist product per se, but it’s available at Coles so I’m going to squeeze it in! My hair has changed noticeably since I added this do-it-all to my haircare routine. My split ends have lessened, my hair feels stronger and it’s way less frizzy (an achievement in the warmer months).
Despite this being a rich treatment, it’s super lightweight so I wear it most days. I add it to my ends post-shower, then start to use it again for my slick bun as I approach wash days later in the week.
