The best hair looks from Australian Fashion Week, according to the Creative Hair Director at Shark Beauty

Australian Fashion Week has wrapped for another year, but our team is still processing everything we witnessed over its five sparkling days. Beyond the fashion that we can’t stop replaying in our mind’s eye, our team is quietly reeling over the beauty looks created across each runway, with a number of these designed by the team at Shark Beauty.

The brand collaborated with some of our country’s most iconic designers and hairstylists to deliver showstopping looks on the runway (not literally, but you know what I mean). Shark Beauty was responsible for creating the hair at Carla Zampatti, Aje, Alix Higgins, Bianca Spender, Mariam Seddiq and Vogue Vanguard, with each style beautifully complementing each collection.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

Teams were led by editorial stylist and Creative Hair Director at Shark Beauty Australia, Madison Voloshin. Given he was named Australian Editorial Stylist of the Year in 2023, his involvement in shaping many of the looks dominating AFW’s runway is unsurprising.

Madison leant on only two key hair tools for this year’s runways. He first used the Shark FlexStyle (coined the world’s most inclusive hair tool by the brand) as a no-heat-damage hair dryer and ultra-versatile multi-styler. Designed for any hair type, it was selected for its capacity to easily curl, volumise, smooth and dry. Secondly, he turned to the Shark SpeedStyle, the market’s lightest digital hair dryer. It takes hair from wet to dry surprisingly quickly, with no heat damage, and intelligently adjusts heat and airflow settings to leave hair with a glossy finish, regardless of hair type or texture.

Attendees were treated to some fresh-off-the-catwalk styling, too, without the need for a press pass. All delegates were invited to join the Shark Beauty Style Salon on site at Carriageworks, where the brand offered complimentary 30-minute hair styling sessions to experience the FlexStyle and SpeedStyle for themselves.

Hoping to learn more about his process and the products involved, I asked Madison what inspired his work this Fashion Week, and how I could recreate the looks at home.

Hair at the Carla Zampatti Resort ’26 show echoed the brand’s design ethos of ‘elevated simplicity’. The inspiration for this show came from the late designer herself, leading to a look as defined as it was delicate. “I tried to pull through the brand DNA by giving the hair a strong yet feminine look using a soft wave, but still giving structure to the hair,“ says Madison.

He suggests priming hair with mousse to get the right volume and texture for this look, ensuring the hair ‘floats’ but still holds its structure. He then recommends running Shark Beauty’s FlexStyle auto-wrap curlers through hair, ensuring it’s sectioned into a brick pattern and elevated for maximum volume. Once curled, Madison advises pinning each section to set its shape.

For textured hair types, Madison used the Shark Beauty SpeedStyle paired with a round brush and a classic rolling technique to create polished, sleek curls, finishing with the  SpeedStyle’s cool shot setting to close the hair cuticle and lock in smoothness for longer.

“Luxurious but cool” is how Madison aptly refers to the hair he designed for the Aje runway. “The energy of the hair look we created is all about being effortlessly done and lived-in, yet still polished – nothing too overworked,” he says. Both the Shark FlexStyle auto-wrap curlers and the Shark SpeedStyle diffuser attachment gave the perfect amount of volume and control while maintaining the hair’s natural personality.

According to Madison, salt spray is the foundation of this effortless beauty look. From there, the rest of the styling comes down to technique and a focus on the ends of the hair, rather than the root. He recommends using the FlexStyle’s auto-wrap curlers to style the ends without adding volume at the crown.

Moisturising creams and serums can be worked into the ends of the hair, but Madison cautions that adding product near the root can smother the natural softness and ‘fluff’ that make this look so special. To help the style last, especially on finer hair, Madison suggests finishing with a mist of texture spray or hairspray.

Mariam Seddiq

For Mariam Seddiq’s runway, Madison brought the drama (and the complexity). “We wanted the hair to echo the quiet drama of the collection – [it features] monochrome foundations with a bold pop, much like the styles we’ve created. From the front, it’s minimal and refined, but as the models turn, there’s an unexpected sculptural moment, a modern take on classic elegance,” says Madison.

He suggests beginning this look with a salt spray, before creating a workable base with the Shark SpeedStyle’s concentrator attachment. Once dry, Madison takes a rectangular section of hair from the recession points to the crown, separates two panels of hair above each ear, and clips the rectangular segment away for later.

Madison recommends hairspraying the loose strands section-by-section, ultimately gathering the hair into a sleek ponytail that sits high on the crown. He uses the Shark SpeedStyle’s diffuser attachment to set the look before teasing the ponytail, anchoring it into a secure bun with pins and a net, and diffusing once again.

To build structure, Madison suggests teasing the top rectangular section, using the SpeedStyle’s concentrator attachment to add volume, and blending the sides with the attachment for a consistent, smooth shape. After everything is pulled back into place, Madison recommends securing the ponytail underneath the teased top section with pins and hairspray.

The Shark Flexstyle and Shark Speedstyle are now available for $399.99 and $299.99 respectively. Find them here
