I’m a notoriously nosy person when it comes to beauty products. I want to know whether you double cleanse at night, how often you wash your hair, and exactly what brand of tweezers you’re using.  I want to know what curl definer you always repurchase and which lip balm you swear by.

Want to snoop inside the beauty regimes of other creatives? Head here.

In short, I adore products. This is why I’ve asked some of our favourite Australian beauty experts to share the ‘top three’ products in their kit. The scope is broad – it can genuinely be anything, as long as they’re the three they value the most.

Joining us this week is Sydney-based makeup artist Carly Lim. I’ve been a fan of Carly’s work for years now, and if you don’t already follow her on Instagram, you should. Her editorial looks are second to none –  from pencil-thin gem brows and geometric lip shapes, to one artfully placed eyelash that draws you in, her editorial looks are always unexpected, always beautiful.

It’s no wonder she’s one of the most in-demand makeup artists in Australia, lending her unique eye to some of the country’s leading fashion publications. I’d give anything to rifle through her entire kit one day, but until that happens, she’s kindly shared the top three items she swears by.

Product one: Sisley Paris Phyto-Teint Nude foundation

How did you first discover this product?

I was very kindly gifted this foundation to try from the brand, and it absolutely lives up to the hype.

What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?

It’s a water-based, sheer foundation. It’s comfortable and lightweight to wear, and since it’s water based, it’s not a pain to remove at the end of the day. It gives the skin an amazing plumped and glowy look. I prefer using something sheer or lightweight as a base, before l going in with a more heavy-duty concealer for troublesome areas, on most people. It’s rare I use full coverage for photo shoots because I think seeing real skin texture is so beautiful, and this foundation allows for that. The skin is beautified but not masked.

Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?

It’s good for anyone who wants a light, natural-looking base and needs to avoid oil in their products. It’s available at David Jones.

Product two: Le Maquillage Pro Fard Créme

How did you first discover this product?

I’ve been using this product almost ever since the start of my career and there really isn’t anything like it. I tried it out because it was always mentioned in this makeup group on Facebook (In My Kit) that had makeup artists from all over the world giving their recommendations.

What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?

It’s a wax-based colour ‘cream’ but it holds better than other typical cream formulas, and the pigment is nice and strong. I can adjust how opaque or how sheer I want it and it’s amazing. I find it makes the colour on the skin look real and lush. It never looks like makeup. I can create detailed and intricate editorial looks as well as natural looks, all the way through to a glam makeup: it can do it.

Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?

It’s definitely more of an artist-y product as it takes a bit of learning to know how to use it well, but hand on heart, I don’t think there has ever been a job scenario where I haven’t used it. It’s a staple. This product is a little trickier to find, but if you’re ever in Paris, a visit to their shop is such a treat. Otherwise I restock mine from Camera Ready Cosmetics.

Product three: Isntree Mugwort Calming Powder Wash

How did you first discover this product?

I’m always looking for different cleansers to try, as well as fast-acting but gentle exfoliants to use to prep talent or model’s skin.

What is it, what does it do and why do you love it?

I love this cleanser because it ticks all the boxes: it’s gentle (thanks to the Mugwort), doesn’t take forever to clean away, but it exfoliates really well and leaves the skin bright but comfortable. A bonus is that I can’t seem to pick up any fragrance in it. What’s also great is that depending on how much water I add, I can tweak how strongly I want to exfoliate.

Where would you find it and who would you recommend it to?

I’d recommend this to anyone wanting a fast-acting but gentle exfoliant. It’s available at Nudie Glow where I gravitate to for my K-beauty fix.

Buy it here.
