Here at Fashion Journal, we make no secret of our love of weddings. We’re suckers for a bit of romance and have a soft spot for weddings that do things differently, whether it’s a Las Vegas elopement, a tropical getaway or a Town Hall celebration.
Acacia Hudson first met her now-husband, Cian May, while she was bartending at Serpent à Plume Paris. “I was behind the bar when he walked in and we both noticed each other immediately,” she remembers. He asked for her number, and they ended up strolling through the streets of Paris after her shift.
“The craziest part is that my husband is Irish, and for about a year before I moved to Paris, I said to everyone that I was going to meet an Irishman in Paris and he would be the love of my life,” Acacia says. “I really manifested him down to the last detail!”

For the wedding, the pair chose to celebrate their nuptials at Copenhagen’s Town Hall. It was an intimate ceremony, with the couple flying from their home in Paris and others joining from around the world, including a trek from Melbourne for Acacia’s family.
“It was 10am on a Monday, and no bars were open yet, so we had champagne in paper cups in the town hall courtyard,” Acacia says. “We didn’t really plan that much of the day in advance so we went to a random pub across the road for the town hall for another glass, then to a restaurant called Donna where we had a private room booked.” It was there the couple celebrated with a bouquet toss and garter throw, before heading to a rooftop bar and finishing the night with a stop-in at 7-Eleven.
Fashion Journal: Hi Acacia! How did you meet Cian and how did the proposal happen?
Acacia: We met at a bar I was working at in Paris, Serpent à Plume. I was behind the bar when he walked in and we both noticed each other immediately. He got my number and when I finished my shift, he invited me to meet him at another bar. He walked back to my work to get me, carried my bag for me and held my hand. We ended up walking together for a while through the streets of Paris and sitting on a bench and talking for ages, it was so sweet and romantic!

For the proposal, we’d been talking about the possibility of marriage for a while and he ended up proposing to me on Christmas Day in the park near our house in Paris. It was foggy and freezing and the park was completely empty. We sat on a bench and he got out ‘one more present’ for me which was an engagement ring. He was so nervous, his hands were shaking. It was a very special moment.
What venue did you choose for your wedding and why?
We got married in Copenhagen at the town hall. We had no idea what to expect but the space was beautiful, the walls were covered in traditional paintings and the celebrant did such a wonderful job of making us feel special despite that fact that she probably did 20 weddings that day.

Again, we had no idea what to expect but the place was stunning and we had a beautiful modern-Italian lunch. We rounded off the day by bar hopping to a rooftop bar and then an old Irish/Danish pub we’d found the day before. We ended up hitting 7-Eleven for a midnight snack before we went home to bed.
Was it a big or intimate wedding?
It was pretty intimate! We had our parents and siblings which was super special, especially as my parents had come all the way from Australia. We also invited a few close friends and I was lucky enough that a lot of my closest friends live in Europe at the moment. I think it was around 20 of us in total. It was definitely sad missing a few of our favourite people but I felt so much love from everyone near and far.
Where was your outfit from and what was the process of sourcing it like?
A friend of mine, Roberta Haasner, actually offered to make my dress for me which was so special. We designed it together and picked out the fabric and details. I wanted something a bit Victorian so I opted for linen and calico fabrics over more traditional materials which I loved.
She did an incredible job and pulled the entire thing together a couple days before the wedding including a fully boned corset. I picked it up the night before we left and I actually only tried it on all together the morning of the wedding. I was also late to the ceremony because it took an hour for me to get laced into the corset that morning!
What about Cian’s outfit?
My husband works at a tailoring company called Husbands (coincidentally) in Paris that makes incredible suits that he wears most days, so of course he wore a full look by them with a gorgeous pinstripe black velvet jacket.
In terms of beauty, tell us about the look you went for on the day and what your inspiration for it was.
I did my own hair and makeup! I didn’t actually know what I was going to do until the morning of, I just thought it would come to me as I went. I just did a slightly darker version of my everyday makeup, a bit on the eyes and lips and that was it.
What kind of food and entertainment did you have on the day?
We had a set menu at Donna that was modern Italian and again I didn’t know what it would be so I was so pleasantly surprised! The food was amazing and the benefit of a small wedding meant we actually got to eat it all. At the restaurant we had a private room so we decided in the moment to do all the traditional things like the bouquet toss and garter throw which was so fun, none of us had been to many weddings before so we sort of made it up as we went along.
We didn’t have a cake on the day but in Dublin the week after, my husband’s sister surprised us with a beautiful cake for the family which was so special.
How did you capture the event?
One of our friends at the wedding, Francis Delacroix, is a super talented photographer so we asked him to take the pictures and he did a wonderful job. I also just trusted that my friends would capture it all on their phones, which they did. We also got out the video camera from my childhood and filmed the entire weekend on tape which was definitely one of the best decisions we made.
