Marriage in the modern age can take any form. Women are proposing to their partners, couples are having two weddings and brides are throwing away a white dress in favour of colour. Traditions have become something you choose to opt into, rather than a set of unflinching expectations.
While engagement rings typically remain a crucial step in marriage, they can take any form. Some prefer a timeless, classic diamond, others will lean towards coloured gems and unconventional settings – there’s really no one way to do it.

Whether you’re happily married, longing to tie the knot or have zero desire to wed, it’s always fun to take a peek at how others have done it. Here, six fashion people show us their engagement rings and tell us the story behind their proposal.

I first proposed to my partner Jack and then he proposed to me separately, a few months later. Jack designed my ring (I’ve seen the sketches, they’re too cute) and took his drawings to Olivia at Cleopatra’s Bling knowing I love her brand, ethos and art.
I never liked the idea of an engagement ring that was too ‘blingy’ and I’ve never been a big diamond gal (even though they’re my birthstone). Jack and I never had any conversations about rings either but it goes to show how he knows me and my taste because it’s better than I could have imagined – it’s timeless, subtle and organic.

My fiancé surprised me with my ring! He proposed on a crisp, blue-sky winter day in the Cotswolds village we’re both from in January 2024. While I’d sent him a couple of Pinterest pics and we’d discussed that we wanted to get married, I had no idea when it was going to happen (although I had my suspicions). Laurie went over to the UK a few weeks earlier than I did on our Christmas trip.
During that time, he went to a jeweller in Wales and picked out the ring. It’s a round cut with one natural diamond, silver prongs and a thin gold band. I’d shared with him that I only wanted diamond stones (no other colours) and a gold band. While I’d love to be one of those ‘cool girls’ with a chunky band and gems, I knew I wanted something classic. I was at the grocery store a few months after getting engaged and saw a woman in her sixties with the same style – I love that it’s so timeless. I don’t know how much it cost him. I love that he chose it himself to represent our love and future.

My engagement ring was made by one of our friends, Shannen Young, who also made our wedding rings. I told my partner a little about what I wanted. Firstly no diamond, because I didn’t want a traditional looking engagement ring. And secondly, something that would work well with my outfits.
Shannen made an eye-catching ring that had connecting clovers with pink gems. The ring coincidentally had seven clovers and me and my partner, Daniel, had been together for seven years when he proposed.
Olivia Cummings, founder and designer of Cleopatra’s Bling
My engagement ring is one of my Cleopatra’s Bling designs, the Egeria Ring with a white diamond. It’s handcrafted in 18k solid gold, set with a 1.21ct oval white diamond. As a jeweller, I wanted something timeless but quietly powerful. Egeria, the Roman nymph and advisor, symbolises wisdom and femininity, a fitting muse for a piece that marks such a meaningful moment.
I chose a natural diamond because each one is a rare geological miracle, formed over millions of years under immense heat and pressure. Their journey from deep within the earth to the surface is precarious. Many don’t survive intact. There’s something poetic in knowing this stone nearly didn’t make it, and yet here it is, worn every day as a symbol of love and endurance.

I absolutely love my engagement ring. My partner incorporated my puppy (child) into the proposal thus her staring role in this picture. It is from Cerrone Jewellers, he designed it himself with the guidance from some of my friends. It was a huge surprise, I was completely caught off guard. I’d always wanted something classic and timeless that wasn’t too over the top and I think he absolutely nailed the brief.

My engagement ring is from one of my favourite jewellery designers, Line of the Sun. The founder, Alice Smith, uses the ancient technique of lost wax casting, hand-carving each piece in wax before casting it in precious metals and polishing it by hand.
Receiving the ring was the most precious surprise. I’d once told my now-husband, Danny, how much I loved her work, not at all expecting it as an engagement ring. He proposed in Nusa Lembongan with an 18ct yellow gold ring featuring a deep red ruby. It’s so perfectly suited to my style, a giant diamond would’ve terrified me.
