A regretful haircut is a process that practically mirrors the stages of grief (if I dare say). There’s denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, eventually, acceptance. But I’d argue there’s another step in there: recovery mode.
It’s a stage dedicated purely to restoration. It’s hopeful, full of motivation and will see you doom-scrolling online looking for solutions. The Google search writes itself: How to grow hair fast.

Inevitably, supplements and miracle cures will flood your results, over-promising rapid hair growth. But if they seem too good to be true, it’s probably because they are. So instead, I turned to an expert, to ask if you really can get your hair to grow faster and the most effective ways to do it.
How fast does hair usually grow?
Kay Fitzgerald is a head Trichologist and founder of the Melbourne Trichology Hair Loss Clinic and specialises in treating hair and scalp conditions. According to Kay, hair grows about one centimetre (or just over) per month or 12 centimetres per year. However, Kay notes that hair can grow up to 10 per cent faster in summer months due to factors like circulation, and conversely, can slow as we age.
Is there anything I might be doing that’s slowing my hair growth?
After years of bleaching my hair and using and abusing plenty of heat products, I wondered if there were ways I was halting hair growth. “Colouring your hair or using hot tools may cause breakage, however, it won’t affect the rate of hair growth,” Kay explains, somewhat easing my concerns.
Though your ends might be snapping off, it doesn’t mean it’s coming out of your head any slower. However, regular trims can combat this, helping your hair look fuller.
Your washing process won’t typically affect hair growth, either. “The number of times we need to wash our hair will vary from person to person based on density, finer and thicker hair strands, oil secretion and lifestyle,” she says. “If you have itchy scalp or dandruff, it’s your body telling you to wash your hair or change the shampoo you’re using if you are washing on a regular basis, however the rate of hair growth will remain the same.”
Ultimately, genetics play the most significant role in the rate of hair growth, Kay tells me. Likewise, vitamin deficiencies in D, C, E, A,Biotin B12/B6 and iron can affect hair growth and in some cases, contribute to hair loss.
What products help speed up hair growth?
Kay warns of relying too heavily on products that promise to speed up hair growth, only for them to underdeliver. However, if you’re looking for serums to assist in scalp health, she has a few favourites.
“The Kérastase Specifique Aminexil Force R Scalp Treatment is a six-week treatment, designed to increase blood supply to your hair follicle,” she says. “It will also reduce shedding if you’re going through an increased shedding phase such as postpartum hair loss.”
Other products on her list include the Kerastase Genesis Scalp serum, Dercos Aminexil (available online and at select chemists) and the L’Oréal Professionnel Serioxly Advanced Denser Hair Serum. However, for targeted recommendations, it’s always best to consult a professional directly for a personalised treatment plan.
These, in addition to a healthy scalp and diet, will go a long way in assisting your cuticle and hair health but sadly won’t give your overnight Rupunzel locks.
