Hey, I Like Your Style! Eliza Haigh on asymmetric cuts, baggy jeans and moto jackets

We know personal style is a journey (I’m looking at you, Tumblr years) and our series Hey, I Like Your Style! dives into the fashion psyche of our favourite creatives. We’re talking the good, the bad and the 2007.

While the internet has made our fashion icons feel closer than ever before, even the most effortless of outfits came from a closet with some (well-dressed) skeletons. Clickable product tags, photo archives and lives chronicled in 30-second clips just don’t tell the full story.

This week, we’re taking a look inside the wardrobe of Melbourne-based content creator and retail stylist, Eliza Haigh. When I first saw Eliza’s outfit videos on TikTok, I was struck with inspiration. From her GRWM’s (that’s ‘get ready with me’ to the uninitiated), to clips styling one item three ways, her styling is playful and creative, often featuring a line-up of local labels and thrifted pieces.

However, there’s been some trial and error in getting to where she is now. “I used to worry about how people would perceive me based on my style, as though I had to commit to one aesthetic instead of letting myself evolve,” she says.

“The idea of dressing completely differently from one day to the next almost felt embarrassing, as if it would make me seem inconsistent or like I was trying too hard. Now, I love the idea that my style doesn’t fit into one box.” Some of Eliza’s favourite pieces include her baggy jeans, Oats the Label lace dress and vintage moto jacket.

Fashion Journal: Hey Eliza! Who are you and what do you like to wear?

Eliza: I’m originally from Adelaide and recently moved over to Melbourne. I work full-time in the fashion retail world and make content in my spare time. I like wearing things with muted tones, a hint of character and anything asymmetric!

What has your style evolution looked like?

There’s definitely been a lot of trial and error (some questionable choices for sure). I’ve spent a lot of time trying to differentiate what feels authentic to me and what’s popular at the time. A big part of that has been understanding that I can admire and appreciate styles without feeling the need to incorporate them into my own wardrobe just for the sake of it.

For a long time, I’d put something on and immediately second guess whether it was ‘cool’ enough to reflect who I was on the inside (which, objectively, is pretty cool). Over time, I realised confidence is actually what makes something look good. Now, I dress for myself and that shift has completely changed the way I approach style.

Have you ever felt like you needed to fit into a particular fashion box?

I’ve definitely felt boxed in at different points. When I was younger, I would gravitate towards whatever was deemed ‘hot’ rather than what actually made me feel good. It seemed to be what the girls I looked up to at the time were doing and I felt the pressure to conform.

Then, for a while, I got stuck in the ‘basic girl’ phase (totally fine if that’s what feels right for you). Wearing fast fashion because it was accessible and all I really knew at the time. I didn’t have the means to invest in slower fashion and the world of second-hand shopping felt intimidating until I explored it more.

I also used to worry about how people would perceive me based on my style, as though I had to commit to one aesthetic instead of letting myself evolve. The idea of dressing completely differently from one day to the next almost felt embarrassing, as if it would make me seem inconsistent or like I was trying too hard. Now, I love the idea that my style doesn’t fit into one box. It can be fluid, playful and completely depend on how I’m feeling on the day.

Take us back to those awkward teenage years. Do you have any fashion regrets?

Apart from the boho and surfer girl phase (a rite of passage where I grew up), one particular item haunts me. I had this pair of mint green skinny jeans from Jay Jays that I wore relentlessly, convinced they were the height of cool because no one else dared to be so bold.

To make matters worse, I often paired them with a skinny grey and purple scarf, which I was certain was peak fashion at the time. Looking back, it was definitely a choice but I love that teenage me fully committed to the vision.

What are the most expensive and least expensive items in your wardrobe?

I’ve never been one to splurge too much on a single item but I do have a pair of Jeffrey Campbell lace-up boots on the way, and they’re definitely taking the crown as most expensive. I can already tell they’ll be loved for years to come. On the other end of the spectrum, some of my favourite pieces have been absolute steals! My current favourite is a wide leather black belt with an obnoxiously large buckle that I thrifted for about 20 bucks.

What is the most meaningful fashion piece you own?

I have this ring that my parents got me which never comes off my hand. It’s made by a local artist and has an obnoxious, green stone in the middle. I’m not really someone who places a lot of meaning in material items and my mum often jokes about me selling things that she’s bought or made me but this is one thing that I’ll always love and keep forever.

Who or what influences your style?

I love watching archival runways from my favourite designers and getting inspired by looks from the ’90s. I’m also online a lot, so constantly seeing how people style things has made me rethink how to wear items in my wardrobe. Beyond that, I’m always picking up inspiration just from walking around. Being surrounded by creativity keeps my style evolving and makes fashion feel endlessly exciting.

What fashion piece are you saving for right now?

There’s this Ottolinger denim jacket that I’ve had my eye on for some time now. It’s got asymmetrical details all over, straps hanging off and white paint to accentuate a ‘worn’ look. It’s actually quite dystopian now that I think about it.

What are the wardrobe items you wear on repeat?

My trusty, need-a-belt-to-keep-them-up, baggy jeans. This is a staple that I’ll always go back to because I love how comfortable and versatile they are. On top of that, I have my black lace dress from Oats which I never get tired of repeating. I’m also a bit of a jacket fanatic – I have one in particular that I always reach for which is a cropped leather black moto I thrifted a couple of years ago. That with the baggy jeans is one of my signature looks!

Who are your favourite local designers?

My fave local designers at the moment are Exstasia, Chantelle Lucyl, Emily Watson, Kahe, Purgatory and of course, Karlaidlaw. There’s an overwhelming amount of talent here in Melbourne, so my list could go on forever. A lot of my favourite designers play with structured yet relaxed silhouettes, muted tones and thoughtful production. I also love a mix of streetwear and high fashion.

Keep up with Liza here.
