SOPHIE WILDE’S getting ready essentials? “Music is always good,” the Australian actor tells Harper’s BAZAAR Australia / New Zealand, before adding: “A lil cheeky champagne sets the mood!”

The star of Talk To Me, Everything Now, and most recently Babygirl is getting ready, in this instance, for the 2025 AACTA Awards, taking place in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast on February 7. After winning her first AACTA at last year’s ceremony, this year, she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Netflix’s Boy Swallows Universe — which broke the record for the amount of AACTA nominations for one production. “I am so proud,” Wilde says of the series, adapted from the beloved Trent Dalton novel of the same name. “It’s always amazing when something that so many people have put so much heart into lands so well and gets so much recognition.”

Naturally, Wilde needed a red carpet look befitting the occasion. So, she and her stylist Nell Kalonji turned to Loewe — the Spanish fashion house for which she’s starred in multiple campaigns, and worn more than a few looks from for red carpet ‘dos in the past. Together, Wilde and Kalonji selected a butter yellow lace dress from the house’s spring 2020 collection, with contrasting white piping details and a striking pannier-style skirt. Wilde wore the sheer dress over a white bralette and skirt, completing the look with over-the-knee white boots.

“I loved the combination of the historical look of the architecture of the skirt combined with the much more modern fabric,” Wilde says of the archival look. “With the hair and make up, we wanted to contrast the femininity of the look with something a little edgier and harder,” she adds — with Shannon Williams creating her sleek hair look, and Wilde herself serving as makeup artist (talk about multi-talented).

Below, Wilde speaks about her love of Loewe (and creative director Jonathan Anderson), her style, and returning to the AACTAs.

Harper’s BAZAAR Australia / New Zealand: Tell us about what you’re wearing for the AACTA Awards.

Sophie Wilde: I am wearing a beautiful archival Loewe look.

HB: What drew you to this look? What was the vibe you wanted to go for, and how did your hair and makeup complement that?

SW: I loved the combination of the historical look of the architecture of the skirt combined with the much more modern fabric. With the hair and make up, we wanted to contrast the femininity of the look with something a little edgier and harder.

HB: You’ve worked quite a lot with Loewe now, from wearing the brand on the red carpet to starring in campaigns. What do you love about working with the brand?

SW: I think they genuinely have such a beautiful team and I’m a huge fan of Jonathan. I think what he has done with the brand is incredible, and they’re doing really unique things in the fashion space. He has an amazing ability to intersect fashion and storytelling and create these unique worlds that I want to exist in, and as an actor that is so exciting for me.

HB: You’ve become quite a rising style star on the red carpet. How do you work with your stylist to develop your looks — are you quite involved, or do you leave it in her hands?

SW: My stylist Nell and I will come up with a moodboard together and have pretty aligned taste so it’s very collaborative. We’ll send the moodboard to Loewe who will then interpret it and send us options and we’ll go from there!

HB: How would you describe your style, and how has it evolved in the past few years?

SW: I would say it’s pretty eclectic and it’s kind of always been that way — it is very dependent on my mood or the environment I’m in.

HB: What’s your getting ready process like — what are your essentials?

SW: Music is always good, a lil cheeky champagne sets the mood!

HB: What are you most excited for at this year’s AACTAs?

SW: I am so looking forward to celebrating our show Boy Swallows Universe and all the brilliant cast and creatives behind it — as well as everyone in the Australian film industry.

HB: You’re nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Boy Swallows Universe, which received the most nominations for any production in AACTA history. How proud are you of the show and its reception?

SW: I am so proud. It’s always amazing when something that so many people have put so much heart into lands so well and gets so much recognition.

HB: In 2024, you won your first AACTA for Talk To Me. How does it feel to look back on that honour a year later?

SW: It’s still so surreal and feels like such a privilege to have received that award — it’s still sinking in to be honest.
