From snakes to sex, here’s what your dreams mean

There’s a long list of people I wouldn’t want to be stuck chatting to at a party. The guy who mansplains. The person who doesn’t ask you any questions about yourself. But topping the list is the person who will sit you down and talk you through every detail of their dream.

Analysing your own dreams, on the other hand, is always interesting. I love diving into metaphors, hidden meanings and underlying feelings. What does it mean if I get a spider bite? Does dreaming of sex with an ex point to something deeper?

According to a study by mattress company Onebed (how fitting), it turns out we’re all spending our nights dreaming of similar themes. Snakes topped the list of the most common dream-related search terms on Google in Australia, followed by ‘teeth falling out’, ‘spiders’ and ‘pregnancy’.

Interpreting these through the lens of a dream dictionary (as Onebed has done) can be a helpful way to check in with yourself and reconcile unresolved feelings. Of course, it’s best to take these things with a grain of salt. But if you are curious, here are some of the most commonly searched dreams in Australia and an introductory lesson into what they could mean.

What it means if you dream of snakes

If your dream involves seeing a snake or being bitten by one, then this could signify a hidden fear or worry. Your dream could be an alert or signal, hinting at a threat in your life you might not be acknowledging or one that has yet to surface. While you don’t need to be paranoid, it’s worth tuning into your personal and professional relationships to see if anything feels awry.

What it means if you dream of your teeth falling out

Dreaming of losing your teeth and trying to put them back in place can symbolise a growing self-consciousness or feelings of embarrassment. It might be driven by a fear that someone could discover your flaws or signify a greater loss of control.

What it means if you dream of spiders

Spiders are reportedly the third most common dream in Australia. If a spider is simply appearing in your dream, it could indicate a subconscious feeling of being an outsider to a particular group or person. Alternatively, it could also represent a desire to distance yourself from a tempting situation or interaction.

If you’re dreaming about spiders crawling all over you (which sounds truly nightmarish), then it could indicate feelings of overwhelm or stress in your life, while a spider bite may represent a sense of betrayal.

What it means if you dream of sex

At face value, dreams of sex could just mean your horny, turned on or that you’ve been thinking about sex a lot. However, on a more subconscious level, sexual dreams could signify certain needs not being met.

If you’re dreaming of sex with an ex, it might mean you still need to work through issues or grief surrounding the relationship.

What it means if you dream of weddings

Dreaming of weddings, whether it’s you getting married or someone you know, can represent a period of change or transition in your life. It could indicate that you’re wanting to start a new chapter. However, negative dreams of a wedding, like being left at the altar, might represent anxiety or hesitation surrounding commitment.

What it means if you dream of fire

Depending on the context of the dream, fire can generally symbolise intense emotional experiences, like passion, purification, transformation, illumination or anger. If it’s destructive in nature, this could represent a situation in your life where you feel as though you have no power.

If the fire is controlled and doesn’t cause you any fear, it might indicate a sense of building internal strength and personal growth.

What it means if you dream of falling

Free-falling in a dream can be interpreted as an underlying fear of lack of control or support, or a reluctance to change.

If you dream of falling and jerk awake just before hitting the ground, it could be a ‘hypnic jerk’. Also known as a ‘sleep start’, this is a type of involuntary muscle twitch that happens as you’re falling asleep. It can be caused by anxiety or exhaustion, or a ‘misfire’ of nerves in the reticular brainstem.
