How to Achieve Flawless Skin

Let’s be real — many of us skip the heavy makeup routine most days. We might pass on eyeshadow or lip liner altogether. But one thing we often reach for? Foundation. It’s the key to smoothing over our imperfections and giving skin that flawless look, whether aiming for a natural or more sophisticated look.

Still, finding the right foundation and applying it can feel a bit tricky, especially if you’re just starting out. So, let’s break down some of the most common questions to help you nail your foundation game to achieve flawless looking skin.

1. What Types of Foundation Are Out There?

Scrolling through the internet or walking down the makeup aisle of your local can be overwhelming. There are so many options. Of course there’s always the option of booking a session with a make-up professional, right? The only problem there is that you’re already committing yourself to use the brand she’s using, and you’ll have to either pay her for her tie or commit to buy what she’s spruiking. So, let us break it down, so you  don’t have to go down that route.

The first thing you need to know is that there are three main types of foundation: liquid, stick and powder.

Liquid Foundation
This is the most popular option and feels like a lightweight cream. Great for all skin types (especially if you need hydration), it’s easy to apply with your fingers, sponge, or brush. It’s possibly the easiest to use, and you can keep adding layers to build up the coverage if you feel you need it.

Stick Foundation
Perfect for when you’re on the go, this high-coverage foundation is super convenient and delivers a flawless finish. A good one won’t leave you with that dreaded “mask” effect feeling and can even have skincare benefits. It can be applied with a brush or dampened sponge. One of it’s undeniable advantages is convenience — it’s perfect for travel.

Powder Foundation
Mineral-based powders are all the rage. They’re made from natural minerals and pigments. They’re light and natural-looking. Great for oily skin, they also help reduce shine. Mineral based powder foundations also have anti-bacterial qualities.Use a dense brush to apply for the best results.

2. What’s the Right Finish for Me?

The type of foundation you choose also depends on the look and feel you’re after. Do you want your face to be fully covered with foundation, or do you just want to give your face a “light dust-over”? When selecting the right foundation for you, be sure you know what are the results you’re looking for.

  • Full Coverage: Ideal for those days when you want a completely flawless complexion.
  • Matte: Keeps oil at bay and gives your skin a shine-free finish.
  • Radiance-Boosting: Adds a subtle glow, perfect for dull or tired skin.
  • Moisturising: Best for dry or combo skin, with ingredients to keep your face hydrated all day.
  • Smoothing: These often have anti-aging properties and are amazing for mature skin

3. How Do I Pick the Right Shade?

Finding your perfect colour match can be tricky. The goal is to even out your skin tone without it looking like you are wearing make-up. Here’s how to pick the right one.

The first thing you have to do is determine your undertone colour. On foundation packaging, you’ll often find labels such as C (cool), W (warm), and N (neutral). The way to find out which is your base undertone is to look at the veins on your wrist and use the following as a guide.

Cool undertones – veins look bluish
Warm undertones – veins look greenish
Neutral undertones – somewhere in between

Then, test it out. Apply a small amount along your jawline and step outside to see it in natural light. Take into account if it’s summer or winter. It’s possible for your ski tone to change with sun exposure, so you might use a different shade depending on whether it’s summer or winter.

If this all sounds too confusing, simply take a small amount of foundation and apply in a thin line down one side of your face, not far from you jaw. Does it look like a different colour to your own skin?  Is there a big difference between the foundation line and the colour of your neck?  Go outside and check how it looks in natural sunlight. If you can see a difference, it’s not the right shade for you. If you are able, wait a few hours to check that the foundation does not change colour over time. The trick is to select a shade as close as possible to your own skin colour, so that your foundation is virtually indistinguishable from your skin.

When shopping for face makeup online, it’s helpful to look for images of the product applied to different skin tones. However, as its just too easy to make a mistake when selecting colour online, we strongly recommend your first purchase is from an actual store, so you can be sure to get the right colour the first time. Once you’ve found your colour, it’s just a matter of ordering the same colour online. Even though it might look different, make sure you’re making your selection by the code of your flawless skin foundation.

4. How Do I Apply Foundation Like a Pro?

Choosing the right formula and shade of foundation is only half the battle. The way you apply it is just as important. If applied sloppily or unevenly, it won’t enhance your complexion and could even result in streaks or uneven colour.

Once you’ve got the right formula and shade, now it’s time to make sure you apply it smoothly.

Prep Your Skin
First, prepare your skin. Start with cleansing, toning, and moisturising. Look for a moisturiser with SPF for extra protection and choose one for sensitive skin if you burn easily or have allergies or are prone to rashes or break-outs. A good foundation can hide even the worst blemishes if your skin has been properly prepped.

Next, it’s a good idea to use a primer.  A primer will even out your skin undertones, if you are prone to redness or a noticeable yellowish look.

Apply with Care
Start with a small amount using your fingers, a brush, or a beauty sponge. Blend it well, including around your hairline and neck. Make sure the edge of your foundation is not a straight line, but blends into your hairline without covering your hair.

Damp Sponge Hack
For that seamless, natural finish, use a slightly damp sponge to press the foundation into your skin. Need more coverage? Add another layer.

Don’t ever be afraid to experiment and try things out. That’s the best way to work out what looks best for you. With the right product and technique, you’ll have that flawless skin look in no time.
