Few things top a hot, sunny day in Australia. The smell of sunscreen is rife, the Cool Cabanas are out and the days often stretch long into the nights. If you’re lucky, you’ll spend it in your bathers more often than not.

While every city has plenty of great swimming spots, it’s Sydney’s close proximity to beaches, bays and freshwater bodies of water makes it hard to compete with. From the unique ocean pools and national parks to its range of cafes, markets and wine bars for some post-swim refreshments, there’s no better place to spend a warm day out.

Emma Mulholland, designer and founder of eponymous fashion label, Emma Mulholland on Holiday, is all about savouring that precious laid-back, relaxed feeling of being on vacation. It makes sense then, that she’s a big fan of summer, swimming and Sydney.

“When the weather’s consistently great, the whole city just comes alive,” she says. “There’s something about the energy here that makes everything feel fresh, especially with Daylight Savings giving you the chance to head to the beach after work. It’s such a perfect way to unwind and take advantage of the longer days.” Find her rolodex of swimming spots in and around Sydney below.

“Neilson Park has always been one of my all-time favourites. After being closed for so long, it’s finally reopened and it’s looking more beautiful than ever. It’s the perfect spot to set up a picnic, with plenty of shady areas and stunning views in every direction.”

“Mackenzie’s Beach is one of my absolute favourites, especially because I love bringing my dog, Norby, there. It’s one of those places where you’re almost guaranteed to run into friends.

I also recently took my son for the first time and he absolutely loved exploring the rock pools. Plus, it’s conveniently close to Bondi Road and My Flower Man café, so whether you’re in the mood for a coffee before or some delicious snacks after, you’ve got it all right there.”

Mckenzies Beach, Malua Bay NSW 2536

Wattamolla Bay

“Wattamolla Bay is beautiful and not too far from the city. It has really nice hikes around the national park and lots of great swimming spots.”

Wattamolla Falls, Wattamolla Road, Royal National Park NSW

Andrew (Boy) Charleton Pool

“I love Andrew (Boy) Charleton pool. It’s closer to the city and right near the botanic gardens – a perfect option if you don’t want to brave the parking situation at the beaches.”

“It’s hard to go past the Icebergs – they’re so iconic. My Grandad was actually an iceberg and would swim there all through winter. The sauna is also nice during cool weather if you can get in there before too many people do.”

“I love waking up on a weekend and going for a swim and coffee with my husband, sister, dog (Norby) and now my son, Erol. Then it’s nice to pop into a market for some groceries for the week. My favourites are Potts Point and Bondi.

In the afternoon, I love to stop by an art gallery for a friend’s show or head to a wine bar to have a nice glass of wine and a snack before heading home for an early night. My favourites are Bar Copain, 10 William Street or Chez Crix.”
