Although no two boobs are ever the same, it should come as no surprise that navigating swimwear when you’re a D+ cup will often come with its own set of challenges.
It’s not asking the world to want nice swimwear that offers support. But, apparently, it’s a tall order. Far too often people with D+ boobs are given an ultimatum: you can choose a bikini top with zero support, or tops with heavy-duty underwire that leaves you with harsh indentations.

No one would blame you for resorting to cute but not overly supportive bikinis. The only issue is if you’re walking in the door after a beach day with debilitating back pain.
Thankfully, an increasing amount of Australian swimwear labels are starting cater for people with bigger busts – like Form and Fold. Founded by friends, Carly Warson and Stephanie Korn, after years of feeling self-conscious in swimwear that didn’t fit properly, Form and Fold specialises in making bathers for people with big busts.
Instead of using regular sizing, the label offers lingerie sizing for its bikini tops. “We offer women the ability to shop in their bra size to get the perfect fit around the band and cup,” Stephanie says. However, there are still plenty of small mistakes Stephanie sees when people with D+ boobs approach swimwear.
Fashion Journal: Hi Steph! What are some of the biggest mistakes people with larger busts make when choosing swimwear?
Steph: The biggest mistake women make is trying to fit into a brand that is not lingerie-sized! When you have a larger bust, it’s helpful to shop with brands that exclusively design in bra sizes, for example, a 32E. This allows you to get that perfect fit around both the band and the cup.
When larger cup-sized women try to fit into brands that size swimwear 10, 12, 14, etc they either sacrifice support in the bust or support in the band. With the right swimwear top, you don’t need to sacrifice anything.
How can ill-fitting swimwear affect someone with a large bust?
Sadly, we’ve spoken to many women who haven’t worn swimwear in years and prefer to cover up with T-shirts or singlets at the beach, or even worse, just avoid swimming altogether! When the market doesn’t cater to your body, you wonder if your body is even normal. It’s a harmful and true reality for so many larger cup-sized women.
Are there any misconceptions about what styles do and don’t work for D+ cup sizes?
Absolutely! There’s no one size fits all, and every woman has a different preference on how they feel comfortable and what styles they like to wear. Choose styles that you love and more importantly, focus on fit and correct sizing.
Are there any swimwear styles that people with bigger busts assume won’t work for them but actually do?
So many! We’ve created two styles based on this exact assumption. We spent three years developing our most popular top style, The Crop. As D+ women, when we hear the words ‘crop top’, we think of squashy, sweaty, floppy, unsupportive uni-boobs.
We worked with expert lingerie D+ pattern makers developing three different approaches, producing up to 20 different prototypes in order to figure out how to balance design with the support needed for D+ cup sizes. After nearly giving up, we developed the perfect crop for D+ women.
Can you talk me through Form and Fold’s sizing process?
Our sizing is based on lingerie construction techniques and design, meaning our sizing is based on cup sizes. We offer women the ability to shop in their bra size to get the perfect fit around the band and cup.
What are the biggest differences between a standard swim top and one designed for larger busts?
Where do I even start? Swimsuits with larger cups have an increased weight demand, which means poor quality materials used in standard swim tops will wear out quickly – and that’s if they manage to do the job of support in the first place. There can be up to 10 components found in swimwear for larger cup sizes, most of which you will never find in your standard swimwear top.
