Celebrated artist Cj Hendry is hosting her next immersive art exhibition at Chadstone

In September last year, Cj Hendry’s highly anticipated faux-floral installation, Flower Market, shut down an entire New York City park in just one day. After the NYPD closed it off due to overcrowding, Hendry and her team moved over 100,000 plush flowers to an open warehouse overnight, building an entirely new exhibit for those who hadn’t yet experienced the magic.

Once stating she wants to “blow people’s minds” with her work, Cj Hendry continues to do nothing less. Whether it’s a mirage-like inflatable pool dropped in the heart of the Nevada desert or Blonde, a hyperrealistic hair-themed exhibition staged in a baby-pink retro barbershop, the New York-based Australian artist’s maximalist creations are impossible to ignore.

Before expanding into immersive public art, Hendry gained significant commercial success for her ultra-glossy, meticulous and hyperrealistic trompe l’oeil drawings depicting everything from stuffed animals and fairy bread to crumpled Gucci shopping bags and, famously, a pair of $14,000 Nike Air Mags dipped in black paint.

As an artist traversing the realms of fashion, art and architecture, it only makes sense that Cj Hendry’s upcoming Australian exhibition is held at Chadstone. Titled Lost & Found, it’s Hendry’s first exhibition on home soil in four years. “[Australia is] a place that has always fuelled my creativity and inspired my work,” she says. “Art should be for everyone, and I love pushing the boundaries to make it more engaging in fresh and unexpected ways. Partnering with Chadstone to bring this vision to life has been a dream come true.”

Promising a mind-bending journey through a dreamlike, interactive universe, Lost & Found encourages attendees to get lost and discover something new. From June 19 to July 20, ‘The Maze’ will be open on the lower ground level. It’s a triangle-shaped labyrinth covered in thousands of colourful padlocks, with guests receiving a unique key at The Maze’s entrance. Those who find the matching padlock will unlock a one-of-a-kind keepsake from Cj Hendry.

Up a level is ‘The Vault’, a dedicated installation showcasing Cj’s original artworks and new limited-edition pieces for purchase, alongside a range of luxe collectables.

Both concepts are centred around the idea of a key, an everyday object that can unlock undiscovered treasures, because for Cj, Lost & Found is about breaking down barriers. “It’s all about… inviting people into the world of art and letting them curate pieces that truly speak to them,” she says.

For younger visitors and all those who enjoy moments of childlike whimsy, Lost & Found’s school holiday program, ‘Ah-MAZE-ing’, is a must-visit experience: a dreamlike, nonsensical world where logic is suspended and everything is not what it seems. Open from July 5 to 20, it’s a sprawling wonderland for kids of all ages, with maze building and keychain creation workshops on offer, plus – in classic Hendry fashion – an eye-catching inflatable maze.

“At Chadstone, we’re always looking for ways to merge culture, creativity and entertainment, and this collaboration is a perfect example of that,” explains Daniel Boyle, Chadstone’s Centre Manager. “We’re thrilled to bring such a dynamic and immersive experience to our visitors, giving them a chance to engage with art in a way that’s both inspiring and accessible.”

More than a fashion destination, Chadstone has become a cultural epicentre in its own right. Hosting a mix of emerging Australian designers and high-end luxury labels, Chadstone merges the very best in retail, hospitality, entertainment and now, large-scale public art. Every visit is an opportunity to discover something new, making it the perfect canvas for Hendry’s surreal, vibrant world.

Visit Chadstone from June 19 to July 20 to experience Cj’s Hendry’s Lost & Found, more details here.
