Capturing intangible, sensory details in words is one of a writer’s greatest challenges. Scent is just as valuable as sight – it evokes powerful emotions, memories and personas – yet it’s so much more difficult to describe. And finding a scent that captures the essence of who you are, all your beautiful complexities, can be an equally monumental task.
A signature scent should make you feel something, whether that’s the dreamlike sensation of a moonshine-fuelled evening or the electric sensuality of a first kiss. But above all, a signature scent should make you feel like the best version of yourself, the version you want the rest of the world to see.

For inspiration, I asked some of our favourite Australian perfumers about the scents they love most. Their rich, passionate descriptions didn’t just introduce me to some new fragrances – they gave me a glimpse into the minds developing some of the most incredible perfume brands in the country.
Money Water by Perdristat
Picked by: Callum Rory Mitchell, founder and perfumer of Perdristat
Perfume is a means of transporting you to either time or place, perhaps a memory. But for me, as a perfumer, when I design a scent, I don’t want it to simply transport me but to totally transform me. I want to play a character.
I wasn’t born to be a tall, dark and mysterious stranger, but that is exactly what Money Water from Perdristat lets me pretend to be. A little mystery. A little darkness. Arid heat envelopes you like you just pulled over on a highway bound for trouble, my fingers smell like fresh cash, my spit tastes like mezcal.
On the rare event that I leave the house, I’ll be strictly wearing Money Water. So if you see me on the street, and I smell like I just fired a vintage pistol, don’t worry, I’m actually way kinder than I smell.

Copper by Commes des Garçons
Picked by: John Domjan, founder of Orok Fragrances
Whilst I don’t have a signature scent, my current obsession is Comme des Garçons Copper. It’s everything I love about fragrance: conceptual, a little weird and totally addictive. CDG has a talent for bringing the odd into the mainstream and Copper is a perfect example. It smells like a live wire, like metal warmed by the sun and kissed by something sweet and alien.
The top notes are pink pepper, galbanum and ginger, which dive into a strange, vegetal brightness, while the middle brings metallic accords and smoky myrrh that feel almost electric. Underneath it all is a soft, resinous warmth – labdanum and amber that anchor the experience without dulling its spark. It’s a scent that makes you lean in, slightly confused but completely intrigued. Like licking a battery, but make it fashion!

Sienna Brume by Mihan Aromatics
Picked by: Julia Brown, founder and creative director of Mihan Aromatics
I’m biased – my signature scent is Sienna Brume by Mihan Aromatics. This fragrance makes me feel effervescent, supernatural, tempting and clever. It’s Australian summertime in a bottle. The scent uplifts in any season, at any time, transporting you to your fondest summer memories: tropical holidays, poolside lounging, the warmth of the sun on your shoulders.
It opens with bright citrus and melts into soft coconut and cucumber, rounded out with vanilla, juniper berry, and a grounding resin base of copaiba, which gives a smooth wood feel. It’s completely delicious.

Saint Julep by Imaginary Authors
Picked by: Jessica Tate, co-founder of Lore Perfumery
At Lore, we don’t always subscribe to ‘signature scents’ and treat our fragrances more like a ‘scent wardrobe’. However, I certainly have periods of being obsessed with perfumes and right now it’s Saint Julep from Imaginary Authors. It’s refreshing, sweet and boozy all at once. The prominent mint note is vibrant, lush and green, then the sweet, mouthwatering sugar note paired with bourbon and grisalva (a woody molecular note) gives delicious depth that I find so easy to wear every day.
Even though it’s not your typical colder weather scent, it transports me to sunny days, good times, enjoying a cocktail (a Mint Julep, obviously) with friends. It’s absolute bliss in a fragrance bottle – and it’s also the perfect winter antidote if you’re craving some sunshine.
