Long-time friends Tané Meiring and Gabriel Krestensen started Vermeer Studio as a jewellery label in 2018. Until recently, the Queensland-based label was known for its beaded necklaces, pearl jewellery and classic hoop earrings, however, this past month has marked an exciting turning point with its recent expansion into apparel.
“Our identity has been intertwined in jewellery and pieces that convey confidence, organic form and a pared‑back elegance,” Tané and Gabriel say. “Clothing lets us translate that same ethos into silhouette and fabric.” Comprised of eight capsule pieces, Collection One features clean lines, relaxed silhouettes, a cool-toned, all designed to pair perfectly with the label’s existing jewellery.

When it came to designing Collection One, Tané and Gabriel leaned on many of the same principles used when starting their label: to create something new, while contributing to no new waste. They honoured this by sourcing deadstock fabric from a range of premium Australian brands, letting the materials guide the silhouette and overall design process.
“Jewellery taught us so much about proportion, balance and finish,” they explain. “We carried that sensitivity into clothing with pared‑back silhouettes cut to fall just right, fine seaming and discreet hardware that echo the value we place on craftsmanship and deliberate restraint in every detail.” By assembling an Australian team and utilising local deadstock, they’ve been able to keep Vermeer Studio’s entire design and production within Australia.
Fashion Journal: Hi Tané and Gabriel! Can you tell me about how Vermeer Studios first got started?
Tané and Gabriel: We’ve spoken about creating together since high school, always drawn to the way our personal styles complemented one another. Over countless late‑night conversations (and glasses of wine!) those ideas matured, waiting for the right moment. That moment arrived when Gab became a mother – her own mum introduced us to jewellery‑making and we instantly fell for the craft. The spark was there, the timing felt right and Vermeer Studio was born.
Vermeer Studio is known for its beautiful and timeless jewellery. What inspired your expansion into apparel?
Jewellery was our first language, pieces that feel effortless, understated and enduring. Clothing was the natural continuation of that narrative. With Collection One, we’re translating the same values – simplicity, longevity, quiet confidence – into garments that complete the Vermeer wardrobe.
What does Collection One represent in the evolution of the brand?
Collection One marks a new chapter for us. Until now, our identity has been intertwined in jewellery and pieces that convey confidence, organic form and a pared‑back elegance, each handmade with an unwavering attention to craft. Clothing lets us translate that same ethos into silhouette and fabric. Grounded in thoughtful design, responsible materials and craftsmanship, Collection One is a natural extension of Vermeer Studio, an authentic expression of who we are.

How would you describe the feel and aesthetic of the collection to someone who has never seen it before?
The collection exudes a quiet confidence, they’re pieces that speak softly yet leave a lasting impression. Clean lines and purposeful silhouettes keep everything refined rather than over‑designed. Timeless neutrals and subtle texture play add depth without distraction and every piece in the collection resonates with a certain ease of wear and sits perfectly alongside our Vermeer jewellery, completing the story head to toe.
Some of the fabrics, like linen, cotton poplin, cupro and wool, are surplus materials from other Australian brands. Can you tell us more about the decision to use deadstock?
Using deadstock fabric was an intentional choice. We wanted to create without contributing to new waste and knew the Australian industry held beautiful, under‑utilised fabrics. Each textile informed the design: we worked with the cloth, letting its drape, weight and texture guide silhouette and detail. Starting with a circular approach felt true to our values from day one.
How did the principles and techniques of jewellery design carry over into your approach to designing clothing?
Jewellery taught us so much about proportion, balance and finish. What were the biggest creative or logistical challenges in launching Vermeer Studio’s first apparel collection?
The biggest challenge was finding a team that truly understood our vision and the level of quality we wanted to create and convey while also keeping our production within Australia. We found a wonderful team of women who have helped us bring the collection to life exactly as we envisioned. It came after lots of trial and error but it’s all part of learning as we go and ensuring the quality and intention remain consistent throughout.
What was behind your decision to limit the collection to eight pieces?
We wanted every garment to matter – there are no filler pieces, just purposeful essentials. Eight pieces let us devote time to perfecting the cut, fit and finish while echoing our ethos of quality over quantity.
How do you see the future of Vermeer Studio’s apparel developing? Is it through more capsules, expanded collections, or something else entirely?
We’ll grow with the same intention that guides our jewellery, steadily, listening to our community and staying true to our aesthetic. More capsules will follow, each building toward a considered, complete wardrobe under the Vermeer name but always at a pace that preserves craftsmanship and authenticity.
