We all know the job hunt can be a stressful process. Your CV goes a long way in telling prospective employers the top line of what they need to know about you, but the job interview is where you can really sell yourself. Whether it’s on Zoom or in real life, first impressions count and your outfit can speak volumes.
In creative industries, I’d argue that the stakes are even higher. You want to show off your style and individuality but you also want to appear professional. For some, this might mean uniform dressing with a two-piece suit from an Australian label. For others, showing your knack for secondhand shopping and putting together a vintage outfit will score you brownie points.

It can be helpful to seek inspiration from others – from juniors who have landed their dream jobs to senior leaders who could very well be sitting on the other end of the interview table. Having asked them ourselves, these are the failsafe outfits fashion people would wear if they were gearing up for a job interview.

I put a lot of emphasis on what I wear to job interviews. It’s really important to me that it reflects my values, personality and style (of course). Sometimes you don’t have long to talk about who you are in interviews, so I want my outfit to do the talking for me. Someone once told me you should always wear something memorable to an interview, like a pop of colour or an unexpected print. That’s always stuck with me. I know it’s old school but I’ll always wear a suit or at least a blazer to an interview. I think it’s a nice sign of respect.
Lately, I’ve loved wearing my Kowtow suit and stripe tee. It’s a classic black suit made from a relaxed material and fit, so I never feel overdressed. The stripe tee adds a memorable contrast and works well against my hair. I also love the story behind the suit and how Kowtow developed it to be plastic free, a great case study for an interview! I always want to feel like the most confident, put together version of myself walking into an interview. Especially in creative industries, I think it’s important to balance professionalism with a sense of style and personality, so your outfit actually feels like you.
Blazers are a big part of my wardrobe, so naturally I’d reach for something tailored. My pinstripe Ganni blazer is a no-brainer – I wear it everywhere. It’s timeless, and the asymmetric cut gives it just enough edge to still feel interesting. I styled it with black shorts, sheer tights and heels to keep things chic, without leaning too far into corporate territory.
That said, if you’re heading into something a little more buttoned up, I’d swap the shorts for a tailored straight leg or flared pant. My best advice is to dress like yourself and wear something that makes you feel good, because confidence is always the best accessory.

When it comes to dressing for an interview, I think about striking the balance between expressing my authentic self and wearing an outfit that is aligned with the role and company I’m interviewing for. For me, that means opting for a look I feel comfortable in, one I’ve worn before, that’s drawn compliments from friends and always makes me feel confident. The kind that leaves a memorable first impression.
So how do I implement this? Sophisticated casual. Through a combination of a Molly Goddard skirt, vintage Adidas track jacket and Asics X Cecilie Bahnsen sneakers, I feel super comfortable knowing that I’m being ‘me’. A Piens scrunchie to keep my hair neat and various pieces of jewellery I’ve inherited and collected always tie every outfit together.

For my interview with Fashion Journal a year ago, I remember wearing an oversized stripe shirt, black pants, loafers and I tied my hair back in a slick bun. Little has changed in the time since – for anything work related, I like toeing a line between having fun with my outfit and having a trusty uniform to fall back on. Today, I’d still opt for a tailored look, probably a suit like this one from St. Agni, and pair that with a plain long sleeve top and a red leather bag for a pop of colour.

For a job interview, I typically aim for a casual but professional look that balances comfort with confidence. I try to stick to my usual sense of personal style so that I feel myself when presenting.
