It was in 2014, the height of soft grunge and moody Tumblr poetry, when Banks gave angsty girls everywhere the gift of her debut album, Goddess. Full of gritty confessionals, haunting gospel vocals and poignant lyricism, it perfectly captured the emotional whiplash of falling in love with all the wrong people. Goddess said – or rather, breathlessly sung – the quiet part out loud.
It was a powerful opening for Jillian Rose Banks, a California native who started making music in her bedroom at age 14. After the dizzying success of Goddess, she spent the next decade cementing her place as music’s brooding, evocative, alt-pop star, each album bringing a balance of gut-punching emotion and addictive dance tracks.

Over the three albums since Goddess’ release (The Altar, III and Serpentina), Banks has made us feel the entire emotional spectrum of heartbreak, forgiveness, anger and lust. Her latest album, Off With Her Head is the most sure of herself she’s ever been.
Fans of the new release will be pleased to know Banks is bringing the Off With Her Head Tour to Australia this November. Playing three exclusive shows across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, the tour is set to be Banks’ most electric performance yet. Off With Her Head encapsulates the complexity and duality of women – equal parts soft, sweet, introspective and deliciously vengeful. This unmissable tour is Goddess, all grown up.
She’s still a hopeless romantic, of course, but she sings with the self-assurance and fearlessness of someone who knows her worth. It’s playful, sexy and in true Banks fashion, unapologetically earnest. It’s an album you can put on while getting ready for a night out – but be prepared to stop, mid eyeliner-flick, to belt out lyrics like ‘I hate your ex-girlfriend’.
Describing it as “the most joy that she’s ever had on an album”, Banks enlisted the help of friends like Sampha and Doechii to bring Off With Her Head to life. “In many ways, this album serves as a big sister to Goddess,” Banks told Billboard. “After a decade apart, I’ve reunited with the core musicians and producers who shaped my debut. Yet, it also represents something entirely new, reflecting my growth as both an artist and a person.”
Suppose you’re interested in experiencing the perfectly self-deprecating lyrics of ‘Delulu’ (My therapist just quit me/ She said that she was sick and tired of sayin’ the same thing) or the heady, out-of-this-world vocals of ‘Meddle in the Mold’ in real life. Clear your calendars for May 26, as tickets go on sale and they’ll undoubtedly move fast. Frontier Touring members can access presale this Thursday May 22.

Once naming her music as “the cure to my helplessness”, what makes Banks so unique is her ability to deliver raw, unfettered honesty in music that never feels taxing – if anything, it’s the opposite.
For the unacquainted, Goddess should be considered required listening for anyone who’s ever been through a complicated situationship. ‘Waiting Game’ details the hot-and-cold nature of toxic relationships (I’m thinking it over/ The way you make me feel all sexy, but it’s causing me shame/ I wanna lean on your shoulder/ I wish I was allowed, but I don’t wanna cause any pain) while ‘Someone New’ waves the white flag (Everything I do, I’m gonna think of you/ Don’t know what else to do) and ‘Brain’ hits him where it hurts (I can see you struggling, boy, don’t hurt your brain/ Thinking what you’re gonna say).
Just last year, Australians experienced Banks in all her ethereal glory across two sold-out acoustic shows in Melbourne. It’s not often an album necessitates a 10-year re-release and global anniversary tour, but Goddess absolutely does – and fans were treated to a stripped-back reimagining of the iconic debut with Goddess: Unplugged.
“I make things that come from the heaviest part of me. I want my music to affect; people’s hearts and minds – and their bodies,” Banks told Vogue in 2013. “R&B has that – it forces you to move and feel.”
Banks’ Off With Her Head tour is on sale from 11am May 26, with pre-sale from 11am May 22. Find more information here.
