A beautifully tailored suit that holds its ground outside the boardroom is both hard to find, and a closet essential these days.
Women in suits have come along way throughout the fashion timeline. Something that was always well considered and reserved for the world in menswear, it wasn’t until French actress Sarah Bernhardt started her scandal in 1870 through coveting boyish suits in her public appearance.
Fast forward to the the 70s, and Helmut Newton’s iconic photograph of YSL’s Le Smoking tuxedo brought women in suiting to the attention of the mainstream. Cut to Diane Keaton’s love for boyish suits, then to Susan Sarandon and her look for Cannes Film Festival in ’78 — a testament that there is nothing more endearing than a woman in the right suit jacket. Now, in 2025, the suit has reached full power status.
It began, as these things often do, with a whisper on the runways: Saint Laurent’s precision, Ferragamo’s restraint, Alexander McQueen’s architectural flair. But by the time the Spring/Summer 2025 season wrapped, the message was loud: the suit, in all its forms, is back — and this time, it belongs to everyone.
Over on Australian shores, at Sydney Fashion Week, the silhouette has already settled in. Outside shows, the tailoring is tactile and lived-in. Blazers fall long over loose shorts. Pinstripes are softened with linen. Button-downs are oversized and barely buttoned. The look is less “borrowed from the boys” and more “owned by whoever’s wearing it.”
Now, from the likes of Acne Studios and Saint Laurent, to local brands like Viktoria and Woods and Faithful, we’re rounding up some of our favourite soft suiting for the coming cooler months ahead. Wear it all together or separate the pieces, here are the ones that we love.
