In today’s social-media-fuelled world, it’s easy to be swayed by the belief that true personal style is dead. With so much time spent scrolling our feeds, we’re constantly bombarded with haul videos of the latest must-try microtrends, all designed for instant gratification. It’s a tiring (not to mention wasteful) cycle – one that can leave us feeling detached from our own self-expression.
But if vintage fashion has taught us anything over the years, it’s that individuality has always existed outside the clutches of trends. It’s about choosing pieces that don’t just look good, they feel good – timeless garments crafted with love, worn with purpose, and rediscovered anew.
Inspired by Espolòn Tequila’s new To the Bone campaign – an ode to unapologetic originality – we caught up with Sydney-based fashion reseller and designer, Lillian Scott, to explore how pre-loved garments can shape our personal style.

What sparked your journey into fashion?
I actually studied International Relations at university, so a career in fashion was never really something that felt projected or even possible for me. But honestly, from the age of about 12, almost all of my spare time went into dressing up, styling looks, taking photos, and making little shoots happen – it’s always been my thing. Where I’ve ended up now wasn’t some grand plan – it’s more like a natural byproduct of years of quietly obsessing over it without even realising that it could turn into something real.
What drew you to second-hand and archival fashion in the beginning?
I grew up thrifting with my family. Saturday mornings were all about circling garage sale ads in the local paper and driving around hunting for treasures. So I was introduced to the hunt from a pretty young age. As I got older, it became (slightly) less about the novelty and more about the accessibility. Thrifting gave me the freedom to experiment, upgrade, and expand my wardrobe in ways that would’ve never been economically possible otherwise.

In what ways has shopping second-hand influenced your personal style?
Almost entirely. It pulls me away from trends and big shopping centres or mindless online scrolling. Thrifting has taught me to focus more on textures, colours, and fabrics that genuinely suit me – pieces that feel good, look good, and last. Obviously, I’m still influenced by the world around me (trends seep in, as they do) but they don’t dictate how I dress.

What does being unapologetically original mean to you?
I think “unapologetic” sums me up in general – not just when it comes to style. I do what I want, wear what I want, and I choose what makes me feel good. That, in itself, gives me a real sense of power. It’s being able to throw on a baggy tee and knee-length shorts and still feel sexy. It’s not about the clothes, it’s about the energy.

How do you use fashion as a form of self-expression?
I know I push boundaries in how I dress, and I love that. I like to match the environment I’m in, but always with my own twist. There’s something really fun about infiltrating a subculture by mirroring their style, while still bringing your own flavour to it. It’s like playing dress-up with intention. It’s an amazing way to be able to connect with a new group of people, because while they feel you are one of them, they still see the real you as well.
