Here at Fashion Journal, we make no secret of our love of ballet flats. The style has emerged and reemerged in the fashion zeitgeist repeatedly throughout the years – from Alexa Chung’s influence in the 2010s, to the more recent Miu Miu and Maison Margiela Tabi takeover, there’s always been a place for them in our wardrobes.

I’d argue it’s because ballet flats are objectively fashion’s most versatile shoe. Regardless of the season or the occasion, they’re a year-round staple you can wear a multitude of ways. And that’s not to mention the countless shapes, colours and embellishments on offer from a range of local labels.

If you’re still not convinced, take a look at how our favourite fashion creatives are currently styling ballet flats.

My black ballet flats from Cos are on constant rotation, all year round. In summer I throw them on with a flowy dress or skirt but as the weather cools down I love styling them with jeans and a tailored blazer or trench coat. Ballet flats are typically quite dainty so I think it’s fun to mix them with sharper, structured pieces for contrast. They’re truly such a versatile wardrobe staple and my go-to when I want to be comfy but chic!

Ballet flats are worn year round in my house. Personally, if I invest money into a piece I want to know that I’m able to style it no matter the weather.

Lately, I’ve been wearing fun patterned tights with my ballet flats. They elevate a look while keeping my legs warm. These polka dot tights from Gorman give me so much joy but I also have my eye on a few fun patterned tights from Moody MuMu, Leggy and High Heel Jungle. I’m also on the lookout for a great pair of leg warmers to layer on top!

Lately, I’ve been getting back into mini shorts and skirts. I love the way they can be styled for cooler weather, especially with a pair of stockings and ballet flats. There’s something so put-together yet playful about the combination. I’ve been gravitating toward mini suit shorts in particular – they pair perfectly with a thicker stocking for extra warmth and a classic flat. It’s an easy go-to that still feels thoughtful and I’ve definitely been drawing on some of my favourite ’90s outfit references for inspiration.

As the weather cools and I start to happily layer up, I’m always looking for ways to contrast heavy outfitting with light, dainty elements. See: this wool kilt over black pants paired with feminine ballet flat moment. I absolutely adore the ballet flat style and these Depop finds (originally from Cotton On) are my favourites. They’re equal parts comfortable with the flat rubber sole, edgy with the silver metal circular embellishments and girly in style – all elements I’m consistently trying to communicate through my outfits in their entirety.

This pair have supported me on some wild nights out, bike riding my way through town, adventuring in various European cities, on first (and second) dates, to and from my regular work routine – and I’m nothing but excited to find out where they will take future me.

If you’d asked me three years ago in my sporty era if I’d wear a little red ballet flat with pink bows, I’d giggle in your face. But was I wrong! I now own numerous pairs of these shoes and think they’re the chicest little things.

Preparing for winter I’m thinking thick socks, tights, maybe even a fish net. Hot. Shout out to LMS for making the cutest pairs ever too, that you don’t need to break in at all. Ballet flats are on my weekly rotation and I’m loving this girly shoe era.

I have a pair of deep red ballet flats that always remind me of Dorothy Gale on the Yellow Brick Road. In colder weather, I love styling them with plain white socks or, if I’m feeling a bit cheeky, with lace ruffle socks. I also enjoy layering them over sheer stockings for added texture. To balance out the sweet, playful vibe of the ballet flats, I often pair them with an oversized jersey or jacket to create a more interesting and dynamic outfit story.
