How the nightgown became fashion's favourite piece

In a fashion world constantly chasing the next big statement, the most radical thing you can wear might just be… a nightgown. Once confined to bedrooms and Jane Austen adaptations, the nightgown has officially slipped out of sleepwear and into the streets. It’s no longer just for drifting between sheets —in 2025, the nightgown has received the ultimate cool girl makeover.

For proof, you need only look to the stage at Coachella Weekend One, when certified It girl Addison Rae took to the stage in a floor-skimming creation pulled straight from Chloé’s Fall Winter 2025 collection. The slightly sheer gown made for the perfect photo moment, with Rae opting for a pair of custom Victoria’s Secret underwear underneath which, if you looked closely, read the date of her album release date.

Sabrina Carpenter, too, has become somewhat of a poster girl for the nightgown movement. Her Short n’ Sweet tour wardrobe is nearly entirely made up of sheer babydoll style dresses, with plenty of satin, lace, and sparkle thrown in for good measure.

And Kaia Gerber has also been a major proponent of the trend, even designing her own nightgown in collaboration with Doên. The resulting look — soft ivory cotton, a ruffled hem, just the right amount of décolletage — feels like it’s been pulled straight from a period romance novel, but worn with bed-hair and Birkenstocks, it leans more L.A. than London drawing room.

Like most trends of this kind, the nightgown has roots on the runway. In addition to Chloé’s dalliance with Pride and Prejudice-coded pieces, labels like Simone Rocha have continued to romanticise the undone, with floaty, bedroom-inspired pieces gracing the runways on their Spring Summer 2025 runway. At Mirror Palais, nightgown dressing is the entire ethos: slinky, nostalgic, and impossibly pretty. Even at Miu Miu, where underwear has long been outerwear, models walked in slips reminiscent of nightgowns, paired with oversized coats and socks, as if they rolled out of bed and straight onto the runway.

Maybe it’s no surprise that, after years of loud prints, lockdown-era sweats, and trend cycles that move faster than we can keep up with, fashion’s having a softer moment. The nightgown satisfies that craving — it’s comfortable but still feels elevated, like you’ve made an effort without trying too hard. There’s also a quiet kind of rebellion in choosing to take up space in something so unapologetically feminine. Want to embrace the trend? Shop our favourite nightgowns, below.
