Muji is relaunching its premium ‘Labo’ apparel line in Australia

Following a successful rollout in Europe and the United States, Muji is relaunching its premium apparel line here in Australia with a new creative direction. Available exclusively at select shops in Melbourne and Sydney, the Japanese lifestyle brand hopes Labo, by Ryohin Keikaku, will elevate its quiet, minimalist presence through a refined design language and unique materials.

In many ways, the revised Muji Labo preserves the ethos of its parent brand, stripping down design to its essence and placing purpose at the forefront. But it’s also laser-focused on the future, on staying one step ahead of Muji’s core line. The verdict? An undeniable success.

The in-house design team at Muji Labo, short for ‘laboratory’, has approached this capsule collection with a clear vision: allow the qualities inherent to rare, natural materials to lead the design process. Here, materials aren’t an afterthought – they’re in the driver’s seat, shaping each garment’s shape, texture and purpose.

The brand has sourced some materials that are distinctly Japanese, like a lightweight blend of traditional washi material and organic cotton. Other materials hail from lands more distant, like cashmere from the Eastern Mongolian Plateau, left undyed to honour the fabric’s natural beauty, and Tibetan yak wool from nomadic farmers, which is warmer than Merino wool yet incredibly soft.

In this collection, Muji Labo acknowledges that natural materials are often the more sustainable and ethical choice. The newest collection also showcases lyocell silk, khadi – a hand-woven, organic cotton from Kolkotta – and recycled wool and cashmere from the Bishu region in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

These rare materials require innovation to source and effort to produce, which is reflected in Muji Labo’s higher price point. However, the garments are undoubtedly worth the extra cost. They are designed to feel and wear differently, with each material serving to provide the wearer with greater comfort, more warmth and a longer-lasting wardrobe.

The differences don’t stop there. The renewed Muji Labo collection features sophisticated silhouettes and detail-oriented craftsmanship that have earned the line international acclaim. The brand’s signature simplicity shines through in timeless garments that are both fluid and architectural, pulling inspiration from contemporary Japanese and Western minimalism.

For the first time, Muji Labo will offer a range of knitwear featuring 16 cardigans and pullovers that showcase the characteristics of the natural fibres used in their designs. The styling direction leans into the layered dressing, allowing pieces to be worn interchangeably across seasons. Like Muji’s core line, this collection’s colour palette offers a sense of quiet elegance, with creamy off-whites, cool greys and deep blacks taking centre-stage alongside pops of crimson, brown and blue.

The Muji Labo collection will unfold in three staggered releases. The first drop, arriving today, will introduce foundational layers ideal for early autumn – low-gauge knits, breathable innerwear essentials, and garments made from silk, cotton and washi. Between May 1 to early May, the collection welcomes the colder months, unveiling Muji Labo’s most insulating designs: think yak wool sweaters, down coats and beautifully tailored cashmere-blend pieces. The final garments land between May 22 and late May, rounding out the capsule with brush cotton twill dresses and additional pieces from the natural cashmere lineup. Each release will build on the last so that buyers can curate an intentional wardrobe.

Customers can also expect to see Muji Labo’s design philosophy trickle into the lifestyle arena. Throughout April and May, Muji Labo will release its own line of accessories and homewares, continuing to focus on high-quality, natural materials in the form of winter caps and stoles, bags, aprons and bath towels.

This new Muji Labo is the next chapter in Muji’s journey in Australia, but also signals a reawakening of Muji’s founding principles, aimed at those who appreciate thoughtful, pared-back luxury. With new items set to be released seasonally, it’s only up from here for Muji Labo.

The Muji Labo collection will be available exclusively in-store at Muji Chadstone, Muji Emporium and Muji the Galeries. Shop the first release in-store and view the lookbook online here.
