Late nights, back-to-back runways, navigating through the most overstimulating street style arena – Australian Fashion Week is a total whirlwind. Someone who can’t get enough of the hedonism is Sydney-based singer and designer, Annie Hamilton.
“I’m obsessed with the intersection of fashion, art, and music and the massive potential for immersive, experiential design in fashion shows,” she says. “I think Fashion Week is an invitation to play dress-ups, be playful and experimental, and to push the boundaries and express yourself through your styling.”
This year, Annie took fellow musician, Tasmanian-born singer-songwriter Maddy Jane, under her wing and headed to Carriageworks for day two and three of AFW. “This was my first time and it was very exciting to get more involved in the fashion world,” says Maddy. “Fashion has become more of a focus for me within my art and music, so it’s a really great step for me to delve into and be a part of.”

On the agenda: Karla Špetić, Bianca Spender, Joseph and James, AFC Talks, and of course, plenty of breaks in between to witness the inspiring ensembles on the crowds. “Yesterday I saw someone wearing a top made of jeans and a heap of ties and it was amazing,” notes Annie.
Both women have put a lot of thought into their own looks, planning out the week’s outfits in advance. “I find outfit planning kinda hard because I actually enjoy getting dressed on a whim depending on my mood, the weather, how I’m feeling each morning – but I loosely planned out a bunch of looks that I could mix and match throughout the week,” says Annie.
Maddy prepped “by working out which local designers’ pieces felt like me and that I would love to support and collaborate with, then I pulled pieces from my own collection, and a few custom pieces by my friend Emma Howard, that deserved to be shown off!”

Tuesday: Fit check
Annie
“Today I’m wearing my own designs: a white, deadstock cotton shirt with ruffled sleeves and a matching skirt I made out of an old shirt of my Nanna’s (deconstructed, re-arranged and reconstructed, raw edges and all). I made a ruffle out of the collar, turned the cuffs into a waistband, and let the sleeves trail to the ground behind me.”
I’m pairing this fit with my Miista leather sneakers (I’m obsessed), knee-high socks, nails by Mannequin Hands, earrings by Kick in the Eye, a hair pin made by Alexandra Dodds and my ’70s cane basket, which turns out to be the most functional handbag I’ve ever owned.”
Maddy
“I’m wearing two pieces by local designer, Katalyst – a brown ruffled mini short and ruffled patchwork top that I’m in love with. All in my brown colour scheme, I’ve paired that with what I call my ‘Bambi print’ mesh long sleeve underneath, vintage brown boots and vintage cow print handbag I got from So Familia. And lastly, gold and brown nails by Mannequin Hands.

“I like to wear a combination of my own designs, my favourite second-hand pieces, and some independent designers whose work I love. Today I’m wearing a mesh top by Flore de Sermet, a top and skirt by my own label (Annie Hamilton) and earrings by Kick in the Eye.”
Maddy
“Today I’m wearing a Kourh dress, Laredo cowboy boots, a vintage bag and my Tasmania charm necklace by Francesca.”
