Early Summer Outfits on Rotation

Wearing Whistles Leather Jacket and rebe top

Trying to squeeze one last post in before Christmas, and decided let’s keep things simple with a quick fire outfit round up. I’m trying to post a bit more frequently over on Substack, so you can subscribe here if you’re after more styling strategies, ways to wear, and also a peek at my best and worst purchases of the year (coming v v v soon!). As an overarching theme, one of the things I’ve noticed about my current preferences is a slant towards more minimally styled outfits that use interesting accessories to add that personal touch. And surprisingly, a shift away from skirts in favour of easy going trousers or longer Bermuda-style shorts.

Wearing Rebe top, Re/Done jeans, Whistles leather jacket, Bared sandals, OLEADA bag

We’re going to start with the least summery of the bunch, as chronologically that makes sense to me. A last ditch effort to try and max out my wear count as much as possible on this leather jacket before the weather heated up too much. Spoiler, I could absolutely have opted for a lighter layer. The things we do for fashion! Things I love about this? The perfectly fitting jeans. The really nice top. And I also appreciate that tension in the edginess of the leather jacket, and the delicate prettiness of the shoes.

Wearing Bondi Born mini dress
Minimal all black summer outfit

Wearing Bondi Born dress, COS shirt, A.Emery sandals, J.Crew bag, Vieux sunglasses

All black outfits never miss. This dress is a bit of a special one as it has a cut out detail to the back, which to me feels quite reminiscent of an old KW style I used to wear on repeat over a decade ago. Details like this are what keep an otherwise simple piece feeling fresh and exciting, plus I love the idea of being able to layer underneath. My old trick was to wear a bustier top from Topshop that added a bit of a lingerie element as a “layer” adding in sheer. Definitely something to think about at the other end of the season when I start transitioning this one for autumn.

Summer style wearing jeans

Sportscraft tank with Khaite shalbi jeans
Vieux sunglasses

Wearing Sportscraft tank, Khaite jeans, Bared shoes, Ateliers Auguste bag, Vieux sunglasses

Another one of those hyperfixation items in my closet that I’m desperate to get the CPW down on; while I don’t think this is the be all end all, I do think when you are spending a decent chunk on an item you consider a staple, that’s likely the end goal. Did a little bookending moment here with the knitted tank and champagne gold shoes. Feels subtle. Minimal silhouette. Contrast with the bag. Tick, tick, tick.

Minimal outfit idea wearing Bermuda shorts and Tibi Georgia sandals

Wearing Leset bandeau, Muji shorts, Tibi sandals, Saben Tilly bag (15% off with JAMIELOVESSABEN15)

A solid example of how I’ve been pairing my shorts lately. My eye has adjusted in the past few months, and I’ve noticed more of a preference toward longer, Bermuda style shorts. Or something that has a relaxed fit (like these here). To create that length through the leg, using a heeled sandal for literal lift. Which side note, as a teenager I’ll never forget the moment one of my girlfriend’s said she’d been told her outfit was bad because she’d worn heels with shorts. Which when you think about it, is just so silly. And I realised recently that I’d sort of made it this unwritten rule to never do the same. Anyway, I like it, I like the heels with longer shorts. A combo I’ll be repeating (perhaps with my snake sandals, next time!).

Tibi sporty nylon dress

Wearing Tibi dress, Madewell bag, Madewell sandals

It’s a little tricky to see the dress here, but I wanted to highlight the back. The way it splices open, and fastens with adjustable straps. This is a nylon number from Tibi, and I’ve realised anything in sporty nylon is generally going to be a win for me as it’s reasonably easy to care for and can be thrown in the wash (even on a hot setting; I laundered this at 60 deg C). Hands down one of my best, most favourite purchases of 2024.

ONTE butter yellow top with DISSH brown trousers

Wearing ONTE top, DISSH trousers, Andersons belt, Madewell sandals, Madewell bag

Shades of brown have been slowly taking over my wardrobe, and these pants are up there as one of my most reached for staples. What I’ll often reach for, even over a black trouser. Worn with butter yellow, it’s a fresh but somewhat unexpected colour combo. I’m reminded here how much I love the traditional pairing of slim + relaxed, as often I’ll forgo this and create the appearance of shape by defining my waist.

DISSH bandeau top with lululemon utilitech shorts

Wearing DISSH bandeau, Lululemon shorts, A.Emery sandals, Quince bag (US only)

An example of how styling can be full of contradictions. Despite how it might appear from an image (iPhones have a habit of stretching out the legs), my legs are proportionately short, meaning I carry more of my height in my torso. Anything with a stretched out silhouette is only going to serve to highlight this, but there are always workarounds. Sometimes it’s nuanced. Like where the item on your lower half cuts off. How the two pieces are broken up into thirds. The silhouette of the item you’re wearing, and the neckline, fabrication etc. And sometimes you’re just trying to convey a mood and you’re not trying to reconcile whether your promotions appear balanced.

Wearing Shona Joy twist hem tee and DISSH jac skirt

Shona Joy aby twist hem tee
Friends with Frank X Muunsan bag

Wearing Shona Joy tee, DISSH skirt, Aeyde shoes, FWF X Muunsan bag

Final outfit really leans all in on simplicity with nuance through the details. The tee is something I’ve gotten a lot of joy from wearing, especially when paired as part of a tonal look. This is all down to the twisted detail at the hem; the fabric lays really nicely creating this seamless, sleek silhouette. You also have that mix of formal and more casual pieces here giving the outfit some tension. Also, have realised that my summer bag wardrobe is severely lacking. Currently coveting a something like this, though this macrame bag has been a good stop gap, and a great way to add in an organic element to my outfits.

I Tried the New App That's Supercharging Shopping Experiences

Do you make your way around the internet and wind up with a million tabs open, links saved in your Notes or email apps, images saved on Instagram, and a wishlist of things to buy as long as your arm? Enter, Carted, the wishlist app that’s about to change your shopping life. I know that sounds a little dramatic, but stay with me.

Imagine a world where you could save all your favourite finds in one place. From that designer dress you need a few more pay days to save up for, or your Christmas wish list, Carted helps organise all your finds in one place.

I started using Carted a few months ago and I’ve found it’s like my own personal shopping assistant. It helps me curate my purchases, plan in advance what I need to buy for my kids, organise wishlists and moodboards for different rooms of my house, and keep track of items that’ll make the perfect gift for the special people in my life.

So how does it work?

It’s incredibly simple. Whenever you spot something you love, simply copy and paste the link into Carted. The app automatically saves the item, complete with an image and price. You can create different boards for different categories, such as “Holiday Wardrobe”, “Gifts for Mum,” or “Bedroom Moodboard.”

My favourite feature?

Once you add an item to your wishlist, Carted’s clever technology sends you notifications to let you know when the item is back in stock or on sale so you never miss out. My can’t-live-without skincare hero is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50, and it’s literally never in stock, so I added it to Carted to snap it up as soon as it was available again. If you’ve got your eye on something that’s sold out in your size it’s the best way to stay in the loop.

Why I love it

  • Organisation is key: I’m not a spontaneous shopper. Everything is planned and curated, so I love that Carted helps me stay organised.
  • Save money: Thanks to the price-drop alerts, I’ve managed to score some pretty epic deals.
  • Gift planning made easy: I love spending time planning thoughtful gifts. Whether it’s Christmas, birthdays, or just because, I love that I can curate different gift lists for my friends and family so I’m never stuck wondering what to get them.

Here’s an example of what my Carted home screen looks like at the moment.

My Minna

I’m forever inspired by Thistle and Spire’s stunning lingerie. They have this unique power to give me strength, confidence and an unmeasurable sense of power. It’s amazing what small pieces of fabric can do, but when created to fit you like a glove and make you feel amazing, well it’s just magical.

My Minna

If you want to feel and look amazing you can’t go by Thistle and Spire’s bodysuit. They evoke so much queen energy and make you unstoppable! Be it for lingerie or fashion each and every bodysuit holds this power.

My Minna

My Minna
From the moment I saw the Minna playsuit I knew I had to try it. It not only looked phenomenal on each model but the placement of each piece of fabric is wonderfully designed to really compliment a curvy shape. I’m wearing the 2XL as I always seem to need this size for my bust. This piece is fully adjustable however and super stretchy. So if you have a smaller bust you can easily size down in this if you are usually a 2XL in clothing.

My Minna

My Minna My Minna
The design of the lower peekaboo cup, lace and strap detailing on this playsuit/bodysuit really feel and look amazing! I can’t get enough and I had to order the Minna bra as soon as I had this piece (coming in my next review) as the colour and details just mesmerize me.

My Minna

My Minna

I’ve paired this with a more cherry red cape an I love the clash with my pale skin. I can’t wait to add even more of these intricately made playsuits to me collection in the future.

My Minna
Please say hello to my 2nd Cirsi corset! I feel in love with a dark purple version of the Cirsi corset earlier this year and loved the fit, stunning embroidery detailing and construction of the fully boned and structured corset.

My Minna

My Minna
So when the black version was released I needed to add it to my wardrobe asap! The black Cirsi is more of a fashion piece for me as it matches with everything in my collection. Now I found the 2XL way too big last time so I opted for the XL/1XL this time around and it’s the perfect fit. It does fully close when laced at the back but as this is a mesh style that’s 100% fine for me. It’s not a traditional steel boned corset but the shaping and structure really give you lift and curves.

My Minna

I’m in love with this fit and I’ll be wearing this both in and out of home all summer long!!! This is the worlds most comfortable corset!

These my be my favourite pieces to date from Thistle and Spire and I can’t wait to share my next review with you. I’ve split my posts into full lingerie and then as lingerie as fashion segment. So check black later this week for more!

How to Master the Casual Yet Professional Style: A Guide for Female Professionals

How to Master the Casual Yet Professional Style: A Guide for Female Professionals
How to Master the Casual Yet Professional Style: A Guide for Female Professionals

Do you find it challenging to achieve the perfect casual look for the office?

From understanding what looks work well in casual office settings to how to achieve the ideal balance between comfort and polished attire as well as how to display your personality without going overboard – read along for how to project professionalism even in relaxed or casual dress codes.

How to Master the Casual Yet Professional Style: A Guide for Female Professionals

1. DECODING THE CASUAL-YET-PROFESSIONAL DRESS CODE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

As a female professional, understanding how to navigate the casual-yet-professional dress code can be a challenge. You want to look stylish and comfortable, but at the same time, reflect a put-together and professional image.

To ensure your look is appropriate:

  • Avoid being too casual and definitely avoid looking sloppy – a t-shirt and jeans is not enough if you want to look stylish and put together.

  • Incorporate more relaxed, comfortable pieces while keeping it professional. If you feel that your outfit is too casual, it probably is.

  • Avoid any clothing that is ripped, revealing, stained, wrinkled or too tight.

  • If in doubt, observe the attire of someone you admire in the organization, particularly your superiors, and follow suit.

2. TYPES OF FABRICS THAT ARE BEST SUITED TO CASUAL, PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENTS

Fabrics can be more relaxed in casual settings and can give you both comfort and movement without sacrificing professionalism. However, always remember, fit is everything – if it doesn't fit well, it will instantly detract from your professional image.

  • Choose items that you can move easily in rather than items that are very stiff or structured.

  • If you still like to have a little structure in an outfit, make sure you balance the look with something more casual to avoid looking too corporate or stuffy – i.e. pair a crisp cotton shirt back with denim.

  • Go for lighter, breathable materials like cotton tops, soft, lightweight knits, or jersey fabrics

  • If opting for denim, go for mid-dark denims which appear more professional than really light washes

Avoid: overly textured or chunky sweaters, very loose/oversized clothing, leggings or any type of athletic fabrics which can easily appear too casual

3. ALWAYS ADD A THIRD PIECES TO JAZZ UP YOUR OUTFIT

Successfully mastering the art of casual yet professional style is all about adding that extra touch to your outfit, and one surefire way to do just that is by always including a third piece.

This instantly helps to finish off your look and take it to the next level. You can also use the third piece as a way to add some more flair and personality.

  • Think of your pants and top, skirt and top or dress as your first two pieces.

  • Then, add your third piece, which can be another item such as a blazer, leather jacket, denim jacket, cardigan or wrap.

  • Alternatively, the third piece can be an accessory, such as a scarf or bold piece of jewelry.

How to Master the Casual Yet Professional Style: A Guide for Female Professionals

4. INCORPORATING ACCESSORIES AND SHOES INTO THE CASUAL YET PROFESSIONAL LOOK

Accessories are one of the most effective ways of adding polish and character to your outfits, and are especially important to help elevate casual looks.

Always consider adding accessories such as simple or bold jewellry, belts or scarves.

By adding a necklace and/or earrings, you can instantly elevate a simple blouse and jeans into a casual, yet put together look.

Accessories can also help to lift the formality of an outfit so it doesn't appear too casual.

Selecting the right shoe is also essential in creating a casual yet professional look. Opting for comfortable but stylish footwear like smart sneakers, loafers, ballet flats or ankle boots can bring a touch of sophistication to an otherwise laid-back outfit.

Avoid: athletic sports shoes, flip flops or overly casual sandals.

5. IDENTIFYING STAPLE PIECES THAT WORK WELL FOR A CASUAL-PROFESSIONAL SETTING

It's easy to create the right casual looks when you have a purposeful and versatile wardrobe. So whether you work in a casual business environment full time or occasionally, it's essential to have the right pieces to help you do just that.

Invest in timeless wardrobe staples that will serve as the building blocks of your outfits. For laid-back settings, consider incorporating items such as:

  • Well-fitting denim

  • Polished tees

  • Relaxed pants such as silk joggers, leather pants, linen pants or wide leg pants

  • Midi skirts

  • Lightweight knits

  • Relaxed blouses

6. THE FINAL STEP: THE IMPORTANCE OF GROOMING

The importance of grooming cannot be emphasised enough when it comes to mastering the art of dressing casually yet professionally, and I firmly believe it's one of the most critical aspects of achieving this balance.

  • A light makeup look enhances your natural features and is ideal for more laid-back days.

  • Ensuring your hair is neatly styled adds to the overall polished appearance.

  • Well pressed and stain-free clothes are a must.

  • Don't overlook your nails; keeping them in good condition adds that final touch of sophistication.

Remember, the devil is in the details, and your grooming will ultimately determine just how polished and professional you appear while dressing casually.

Getting your casual-yet-professional style right doesn't have to be an arduous task. With the right fabrics, accessories and wardrobe staples, you can create polished ensembles that are a perfect balance of comfortable yet professional.

Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing

0
Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing
Source: The Sun newspaper, November 2nd, 1938

Hi all,

Today I’ve solved a long-standing mystery: a charming framed poster that you might remember if you visited Circa back when it was a shop.

Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing

It was acquired along with the rest of the contents of Sydney vintage clothing shop ‘Albert and Gladys’ in 2003, and we hung it on the Gertrude St wall of Circa’s menswear department. When I closed the shop a few years ago, it came home and is now on my office wall.

Despite all my years collecting (and selling) vintage, I had no idea what it was about, other than the obvious conclusion which was that it’s advertising a type of summer mens trouser suit. Poro-twist, whatever it was, remained elusive. But it’s unusual enough a term that it wasn’t hard to find out.

So here it is: Poro-twist was a kind of loose weave of worsted wool that was made into suits, exclusive to Farmer’s Department store and first introduced in November 1938. I have found a couple of mentions of it in North America but it seems to have been particularly popular here in Australia, as a lighter alternative to the usual wool suitings, which is not surprising considering our hot climate (which you may have been experiencing lately). They called it ‘the cloth with a million windows’.

Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing
Source: The Sun newspaper, November 2nd, 1938

NB: ‘coolth’ means ‘pleasantly low temperature’ as well as ‘the quality of being fashionable’ so its doubly apt here.

Remember that in those pre-polyester days, lighter fabrics usually meant lighter weaves, and wool has the advantage of being a breathable, natural fibre. Poro-twist appears to have been an early version of the ‘summer wool’ varieties that were developed in the 1970s. The name is perhaps a combination of its quality – porous – and a weave descriptor – twist, as wool fibres are twisted.

Want to know more? It was reported as being a ‘special weave that allows every movement of air to pass right through and keep you as comfortable as air-conditioning’, it will hold its shape and ‘actually be improved by dry cleaning’ (whatever that means!?) It’s woven from ‘Australia’s finest wools of grades 60 and 70, a 2-ply and 4-ply is twisted together to give a two-fisted toughness that’ll take rough wear’ and ‘every stitch will hold throughout the long life of the cloth’.

Your new suit is available in three ‘modern’ styles and will also fit perfectly thanks to the 66 to 80 fittings available (depending on the year you’re shopping) and dozens of ‘smart patterns’ and up to forty colours, giving ‘perfection’ of style and fit in only five minutes. “Cool suits for a cool price”.

Here are some of the colours that might be on offer: navy, light green, dark green, greys, blues, ox-blood, London tan, off-blue, powder blue. All weighing a ‘breezy’ 38 ounces (1.07kg, not exactly light by modern standards). Quite a lot of choice, and debunks any ideas of old suits all being bland and boring.

In 1942 they were promoting the feel of the fabric, with this charming advert. The presence of a fashionably dressed woman might be a recognition of who was likely to be doing the purchasing, especially during wartime.

Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing
Source: The Sun newspaper, 4th February, 1942.

This particular advert includes the exact price as my poster: seven pounds and ten shillings, which suggests that my poster is also from 1942. That’s about $660 in current Australian dollars.

In 1943 Farmer’s reported that, despite the war, they still have Poro-twists available for sale at eight guineas and 34 coupons (rations), and suggests that while there, you might also like to view their free exhibition of war photography supported by the High Commissioner for the UK.

But – perhaps with war time restrictions kicking in – that’s the last you see of them for a few years, until Farmer’s is advertising them again in 1947.

Fly through summer with Poro-Twist! – Circa Vintage Clothing
Source: The Sun newspaper 3rd December, 1947

I like this image, it invites you to identify with either the smart young man (perhaps a returned soldier) pleasing his boss, or the satisfied boss himself, who has both a pretty wife and a sassy secretary.

By 1954 – when polyesters are starting to arrive on the market – they’re offered in a reduced colour palette of three greys, browns, blues and ‘duotones’. The cut is now less padded, American-style and ‘easy-fitting’ with knife-edged lapels and ‘Melton-undercollar’ as befits mid-century style and ‘the same number of windows per square inch’.

In other words, the fabric quality has not deteriorated and the copy remains as full of hyperbole as ever.

Source: The Sun newspaper, 6th October 1954

Farmer’s were a major Sydney department store, which started as a draper in 1840, and was later purchased by Myer’s in 1960, but continued to operate under the original name until rebranding to Myer in 1974.

As an aside I have several pieces of Farmer’s everyday womenswear in my collection, mostly ’50s cotton print sundresses and blouses. Unfortunately no Poro-twist suits or tuxedos, and I couldn’t find any examples in the usual places either. Sadly so little vintage menswear survives as its usually worn to deterioration or disposed of, so I’m grateful to have the records provided by advertising.

How Safe Are Under-Eye Fillers? Addressing Common Concerns

How Safe Are Under-Eye Fillers? Addressing Common Concerns

under eye fillers

Under-eye fillers are a simple solution to dark circles, hollows, and bags around the eye area. Whilst they instantly rejuvenate your appearance, you may feel hesitant about their safety.

An Introduction To Under-Eye Fillers

Modern under-eye fillers are a popular way to address visible signs of ageing around the eye area, but understanding their safety and effectiveness is crucial. Unlike makeup or skincare products that can offer only temporary solutions, fillers provide a more lasting rejuvenation effect.

Composed of hyaluronic acid, under eye fillers (or tear trough fillers as they are sometimes referred to) aim to diminish shadows and hollows that contribute to a tired appearance. The process involves injecting a gel-like substance beneath the skin to add volume and smooth the under-eye area. While the results can be remarkable, it is essential to gather enough information to ensure you’re making an informed decision.

The Benefits of Tear Trough Filler

Non-Surgical Solution – One of the primary advantages of tear trough fillers is that they offer a non-surgical alternative to traditional cosmetic procedures.

This means minimal downtime, fewer risks, and a quicker return to daily activities. Compared to invasive surgeries, fillers provide a way to achieve a refreshed appearance without the need for incisions or general anesthesia.

Instant and Long-Lasting Results – While skincare treatments can require months to show noticeable results, tear-trough fillers offer immediate improvement; the outcome is visible as soon as the procedure is completed. Depending on the individual, the results can last anywhere from 6 to 18 months, meaning fewer follow-up treatments compared to other procedures.

Customisable Treatments – Under-eye fillers are highly adaptable to each person’s unique facial structure, enabling a customised approach. A skilled practitioner can tailor the filler application to suit individual needs, ensuring a natural-looking result. This customisation plays a significant role in achieving a harmonious appearance that complements other facial features.

Minimal Downtime and Recovery – Post-procedure, most individuals experience slight swelling or bruising, which typically subsides within a few days. Compared to surgical methods that can entail weeks of recovery, under-eye fillers allow for quick resumption of normal activities.

Addressing Safety Concerns: What You Need to Know

Understanding the Risks – Although under-eye fillers are considered safe for most people, it’s essential to understand potential complications. Common issues include bruising, swelling, and redness at the injection site.

Importance of Choosing a Qualified Practitioner – The safety and effectiveness of tear trough fillers largely depend on the expertise of the practitioner. Selecting a certified and experienced professional is crucial. Ensure they have a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy to minimise risks and achieve optimal results.

Allergic Reactions and Sensitivities – Hyaluronic acid, the main component of most under-eye fillers, is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions. However, some individuals may still experience sensitivities to other components in the filler solution. It’s vital to discuss any known allergies with your practitioner beforehand to ensure the safest choice of product.

Managing Expectations – Understanding what fillers can and cannot achieve is crucial for satisfaction with the results. An honest discussion with your practitioner regarding expectations will lead to greater satisfaction.

While they can enhance the under-eye area significantly, they might not address all concerns, such as significant skin laxity or pigmentation issues.

Preparimg for Your Tear Trough Filler Treatment

Choosing the Right Clinic – Research and selection of a reputable clinic is vital for a safe experience. Look for clinics with positive reviews and testimonials, and don’t hesitate to ask for before-and-after photos of previous clients. Verify their credentials and ensure they adhere to hygiene and safety protocols.

Pre-Treatment Consultation – A thorough consultation before the procedure is essential. This meeting allows you to ask questions, voice concerns, and discuss your desired results. The practitioner will assess your facial structure and recommend the most suitable filler and technique.

Pre-Procedure Guidelines – Following specific guidelines before your appointment can help reduce risks and enhance results. Avoid medications that can increase bruising, such as aspirin and blood thinners, unless approved by your doctor. Similarly, refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine before your treatment to minimise bruising.

Post-Treatment Care: Ensuring Optimal Results

Managing Side Effects – Mild swelling and bruising are common after under-eye filler treatments. Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling, while arnica gel may alleviate bruising. Avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure in the days following your procedure to allow proper healing.

Follow-Up Appointments – Regular follow-up appointments with your practitioner ensure that the results meet your expectations and allow for any necessary touch-ups. These visits help monitor progress and address any concerns promptly, maintaining the optimal appearance of the under-eye area.

Long-Term Maintenance – To sustain the effects of tear trough fillers, maintenance treatments will eventually be required. Discuss the timeline and frequency of treatments with your practitioner, based on your individual response and desired outcomes.

Conclusion: Is Tear Trough Filler Right for You?

Choosing to undergo an under-eye filler treatment is a personal decision that requires careful consideration. By prioritising safety, selecting a skilled practitioner, and adhering to pre- and post-treatment guidelines, you can enhance your appearance with confidence.

Whether you’re looking to diminish dark circles or restore youthful volume, tear trough fillers can offer a subtle yet effective solution that aligns with your aesthetic goals.

Dressing appropriately is essential. Nightclubs take their wardrobe standards pretty seriously, and it’s not always easy to walk away from rejection at the door with your pride intact. Fear not!

This comprehensive ‘what to wear to a nightclub’ guide will help you get your wardrobe for your big night out, featuring clubbing outfits men, club attire for men, and trendy men’s clubwear.

Wearing A Blazer With A T-Shirt In The Club

Unless you’re making a serious run at Friday night kick-ons and haven’t had a chance to change, it’s not entirely necessary to deck yourself out in a full suit. They’re dry clean only, and it’s all too easy to destroy one at the club…

An errant glass of red wine will become a costly mistake if you’re unlucky enough to make a drunken spill. Stick to separates instead. A blazer with a button-down and smart-fitted chinos or dark denim is hard to beat. Lose the tie and pocket square.

However, for drinking establishments that are less-club-more-bar, a suit might be the difference between an extortionate entry fee and breezing through the front door with a nod from the bouncer.

What colour suit? If it’s a swanky bar a grey, black or navy suit will do just fine – as are separates using these colours. Make sure your dress shoes are in decent condition – no tatty shoes from your first day on the job. We’re talking about a nice pair of Oxfords, double monks or leather loafers should the weather permit.

If you need help in this department, check out our guide to the best men’s dress shoes.

Wearing Black & White In The Club

Monochromatic outfits are cool, but looking like one of the floor staff is not. Although black conceals sweat and other defects it’s not terribly adventurous and can look sombre in a social atmosphere.

Add a white tee to the black jeans, and a navy or khaki bomber jacket instead of the black jacket. Or find a button-up shirt that has a fine monochromatic pattern to give your look a bit more depth like Harry above.

It’s also important to note that you should stick to a darker colour palette in clubs:

A white blazer or light pair of chinos will get totally annihilated in a darkly lit rave cave where you can’t tiptoe around every unfortunate stain in front of you. Save the lighter garment colours for summer parties.

The easiest combination? Light-coloured shirt up top, black for bottoms. The look can be polished off with either white sneakers or leather shoes or boots depending on the venue.

Wearing A Shirt In The Club

Zac Efron and David Beckham wearing tees and single layers.

Clubs get bloody hot. They’re poorly ventilated and there’s usually a press of sweaty bodies in the way. Plus, no one wants to wiggle their way out of six layers.

The answer is to keep things cool, light and simple. The garments you’ll want are pieces like denim shirts, linen shirts, fitted crew neck tees and any other single layer.

Patterns and colours are entirely up to your individual taste but there are two things we’d recommend: stay away from polyester shirts and always go for a fitted look. Tees are already casual enough; a tailored cut helps to keep your outfit looking smart.

Wearing Expensive Brands In The Club

An expensive and brightly coloured bomber jacket styled with white jeans and a tee.

Simply put: don’t do it. Clubs feature lots of drunken bodies fighting over empty space in booths and at the bar. They’re dark, noisy, and people’s situational awareness is quick to go out the window once the cheap shots get underway.

The Seamaster, Gucci bomber, and Loro Piana super150 wool-silk-linen blazer are all likely casualties in this setting. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by wearing your best gear only to witness it being wrecked in a drunken accident. Plus, it’s dark as hell and no one can really see you anyway.

Our advice is to keep your personal style but pare it down with cheaper options. Instead of rocking your John Elliott jeans, go for a cheaper pair of Nudies which can look just as good but won’t hurt as much if they get stained.

Your plain white tees also don’t need to be A.P.C branded. And definitely leave the Burberry trench (or any trench for that matter) hanging safely in your closet.

Wearing Button Shirts With Trousers For Clubbing

Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling wearing butt-down shirts with trousers.

In most cases, a crisp button-down with dark trousers will get you past the selective dress codes on the door. A plain oxford shirt can’t go wrong, but feel free to experiment with modest patterns to give you some point of difference from the masses.

Tucking the shirt in is generally advised. Some brands offer shorter cuts that are designed to be worn untucked, so just double check the proportions in the mirror before leaving the house.

A short-sleeve button-down should be untucked, and they’re usually designed with this in mind. Smart wool trousers are a solid option and the most formal pants you can wear, but again, they are the most likely to become a casualty if it’s a messy night.

Wearing Jeans Or Denim In The Club

David Beckham wearing black jeans with white sneakers and a green shirt.

The most important thing to remember here is that some venues don’t allow denim at all. Your best to double-check the nightclub’s dress code before adding jeans into the mix and it may be safer to avoid them altogether.

If you really want to wear your jeans, however, we recommend wearing a darker colour or wash as you can find. Not only does this look smarter and increase your chances of getting in but they’re also much less likely to get marked or dirty.

Definitely avoid distressed or ripped jeans — these just look way too casual — and stick with something smarter. We’ve always preferred a tailored look at DMARGE, but anything from skinny to bootcut is a solid choice if styled well.

These tapered jeans are cut from selvedge denim that’s lightly faded for a lived-in appearance. They’re detailed with a logo-debossed suede patch at the back. Wear yours with any of the label’s refined knitwear or tailored jacket

Wearing Leather Boots In The Club

Harry Styles wearing leather and suede boots.

Shoes are serious business after dark. First up, closed shoes are a must. Loafers can be hit and miss, depending on the whims of the folks on the door and whatever standards the venue demands, so be sure to check in advance.

Your suede shoes weren’t made for busting moves. They’re an absolute monster to clean and they will get filthy after a night of stepping through chewing gum, puke and spilled margaritas. Your best bet? Polished brogues or Chelsea boots.

They’re not too corporate nor too quirky. You can dress them up or down with denim or smart chinos, and all it takes the morning after is a quick brush and some conditioner to set them straight again.

Wearing Sneakers In the Club

Man wearing a green bomber, white tee, blue skinny jeans and white sneakers.

Everybody likes a pair of luxe sneakers but sadly that doesn’t translate into universal acceptability on the nightlife circuit. R&B or hip-hop venues aren’t as strict in this regard, but if you’re planning on hitting the sauce at a few establishments then you should probably give the sneakers some time off.

Some venues just don’t allow it, even if the bar where you started the night didn’t take issue. More to the point, your pristine white sneakers will become various shades of grey and green once you start getting down to your favourite Ed Sheeran disco remix.

Save them for Sunday afternoons at the local or trendy hole-in-the-wall bars whose cleaners take pride in their work.

Wearing Hats In The Club

Three men - including Diplo - wearing hats with their nightclub outfits.

Unless you’re a bus driver or a copper you have no business wearing a hat to town. The upscale, trendy nightspots usually have standing prohibitions against hats and spending your time salvaging hat hair isn’t much fun.  As for beanies – just don’t do it.

Wearing Workwear in the Club

You might have noticed the emerging workwear trend in men’s fashion, and if you’re thinking of wearing a few pieces to the club, we think you should absolutely go ahead.

As the name implies, this style of clothing was initially most popular among the factory workers and is therefore very utilitarian and comfortable.  But in recent times, it has gained a general appeal, and we don’t see that changing anytime soon because workwear clothes are super comfortable.

Workwear in the club is great because it helps you feel good, is stylish, and it’s a great way to show off your personality. We’ve already highlighted a few workwear pieces in this article like jeans and shirts. You could also get a good pair of cargo pants or a flannel shirt – check out Dickies or Carhartt.

But try not to layer so much, even with workwear. Remember, the key is feeling comfortable in whatever you wear, and clubs can be really hot. Finally, not all establishments will permit all workwear, so check out their dress code before you go.

8 reasons to add APT's Douro Delights river cruise to your travel list

{sponsored by APT}

I was an unashamed river cruise newbie and am now a new convert to this calm and stress-free way of getting a taste and a different perspective of a new destination. The appeal of this way of travel is felt the moment you step on board. Keep reading for my eight reasons to add APT’s Douro Delights river cruise to your travel list. We started in Madrid, with a bus component before reaching the Spanish/Portugal border and joining the cruise along the Douro River to Porto.

8 reasons to add APT’s Douro Delights river cruise to your travel list

1. The ship: APT’s MS Estrela

The MS Estrela is a new river ship in the APT fleet. The 80m ship was custom-built for its tours along Portugal’s Douro River and really does feel like you’re living on a modern, coastal-inspired, luxury floating hotel – if only for a week! There are only a maximum of 114 people on board and with so many shared spaces, it feels like there are even fewer fellow travellers.

The most stunning shared space is definitely the sun deck. I mean, that pool! It’s one of the largest pools on any Douro River ship, it’s heated and was a magnet for guests every time the sun came out. The sundeck was also the place to be every time we sailed through a lock on the river. This was simply mind blowing to this non-engineering girl!

Even when everyone is together in the lounge area or dining room, the design, layout and floor-to-ceiling picture windows makes it feel like you’re in an intimate space.

The MS Estrela has 57 staterooms and suites over three levels. I was in a French balcony suite on the upper deck and, whenever possible while sailing, I’d return to this spot, open the electronic window and just sit to take in the ever-changing view of vineyards which rise up each side of the Douro river. Arriving at a new town or village was always a treat. Sailing into Porto was something else again. Seeing the city’s iconic coloured buildings hugging the vibrant waterfront from the river was something I’ll never forget.

My 14.6 sq.m suite was just the right amount of space for me (or for a couple), and included a deluxe Queen bed, two sitting chairs, dressing table/desk combination, drawers, shelving and hanging storage. I unpacked immediately and popped my suitcase under the bed. So soothing. So stress-free.

2. (Almost) everything is included in the cost

Apart from unpacking once, this is such a huge appeal. You don’t have to worry about ever-changing exchange rates and tipping because almost everything is included in the cost of your tour – private airport transfers at the beginning and end of your tour, the pre-tour hotel overnight stay, coach transfer to the start of the cruise, all excursions, signature experiences, all meals and most drinks (there is a small premium list of exclusions). Some suite categories include one free laundry service but otherwise there is a cost to having anything laundered on board.

3. The service is next-level responsive

From the moment you are welcomed on board this river cruise, every touch point with every member of the crew is a friendly and positive experience. You can’t fake that care and consideration. It often felt like they were already solving a potential problem before you’d even asked for help.

If you are an anxious traveller, you would feel immediately at ease. I’m not an anxious traveller but I am the chief organiser of any travel we do. What I found wonderful was handing over control of any organisation to people who only had my best interests at heart and who had thought of every little thing so that I could relax into just enjoying the discovery of a new country. What an absolute treat.

Every evening before dinner, Maria, our cruise director, would take us through everything that was happening the next day. You always felt informed and in good hands.

4. The food and drinks

“But what’s the food on board like?” was one of the most asked about in my DMs while on tour. Short answer: amazing and varied enough so that you didn’t feel like you were eating the same things every day. Although, disclaimer: I did eat the same thing every breakfast every day – coffee, a freshly made three-egg omelette with everything except onions and yoghurt, fruit and seeds. I mean, when you’re on to a good thing! Let’s just say, coming home has been a reality check. No-one’s making me an omelette. And my own attempt didn’t look anywhere near as pretty.

The emphasis at every meal is very much on fresh, local produce (of which there is plenty in the Douro Valley region). At each town we docked in, the ship’s stores were topped up with fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. Breads and most pastries (including Portuguese tarts – pastéis de nata) were baked on board. And at lunch and dinner there were Portuguese options, offered alongside a mostly European-influenced menu.

The wine offered on board the river cruise was local too – and it is very good. I did not have one bad glass, red or white. The region is known mostly for its port but it also is home to some incredible table wines and if I could have shipped some home, I would have. Spoiler alert: the freight cost averaged $300/dozen. Cocktails more your thing? The wait staff were always ready to whip up your fave at any time of the day.

5. The countries visited – Spain and Portugal

We started our tour in Madrid, staying the night before at VP Plaza España Design, right in the heart of the capital of Spain. Time poor like I was to discover this city? Drinks at the hotel’s rooftop bar gave a birds eye view of the city skyline and a tapas dinner at La Mi Venta, a five-minute walk away near the Palacio give me a taste to come back, as did the first day of our tour which took us via coach to the university city of Salamanca. It’s an incredible city steeped in history but with a foot very much in the present thanks to its 30,000 university students who come each year to study.

By the end of day one we were on board APT’s MS Estrela, for the start of the Douro Valley river cruise in Portugal. I think this is where I insert a massive apology to Portugal for not having this beautiful country on my future travel radar. It very much is now. I’ve had a delicious taste and I want more. The people are so friendly, the history so diverse and the food so good. The bonus: everyday tourist and food costs seemed much lower than I’d experienced the month before in Greece, UK and France.

6. The excursions

Every day on board the MS Estrela offered a new opportunity to explore in the area we were docked in.

I walked through the mist around the hilltop medieval border village, Castelo Rodrigo.

I learned that port comes in more varietals than just Tawny thanks to tours and tastings at Kopke (the oldest port wine house) and Taylor’s (no connection to Australia’s Taylor’s wines). Just quietly, it’s pink or white port I liked the most – best served over ice with tonic and a twist of lemon!

I learned that Portugal is home to 14 different wine regions, and a must-visit in the Vinho Verde wine region is Quinta da Avelada – for the wine and cheese, yes, but also for the gardens which date back to the 17th Century.

Quinta da AveladaQuinta da Avelada

I walked 686 steps down a baroque staircase from Lamego’s cathedral to the town centre, for a tasting of Portuguese sparkling wine (Espumante) and a “sandwich” the town is known for, Bola de Lamego (a sweet bread with meat, cheese or fish between it) before stumbling across a flea market – oh the ceramics I could have bought! A little hand-painted antipasto dish bought for 5 EUR did make it home in one piece.

I fell in love with the tiled walls at Pinhao and Sao Bento (Porto) railway stations … and on almost every building!

I rode the cable car and walked the Dom Luis bridge in Porto – both may not be for you if heights are a problem but they do offer incredible vantage points of this picturesque city.

And I cooked up a storm in one of the most entertaining cooking classes I’ve ever experienced.

7. The Signature Experiences

APT is known for its Signature Experiences, experiences that are specially organised for each tour, experiences you wouldn’t be able to necessarily book for yourself.

The first Signature Experience on this tour was a three-course lunch, surrounded by wine barrels in a cellar at Quinta da Pacheca, a vineyard dating back to the 16th century and now one of the most prestigious properties in the region. You can even stay on site in the middle of the vineyard in a luxuriously converted wine barrel. The lunch was exquisite – the setting, the food and the matching wines all added up to one of those occasions I’d remember forever.

The second Signature Experience was an evening at the Palacia da Bolsa in Porto, starting with a private tour of what was Portugal’s original stock exchange, before a cocktail reception and an incredible Fado performance (traditional Portuguese music) in the jaw-droppingly ornate Arabian Hall. It felt like something out of a movie set and offered such a special connection to Porto’s history and its people.

8. The Freedom of Choice

Are you are a “need to tick off everything, every day”, “like to take it easy” or a “mix a both” kind of traveller? . APT crew on the river cruise work with you to ensure you can personalise your experience with Freedom of Choice excursions to suit your interests. Choose from a few options to suit your taste. With APT you have the Freedom of Choice – to say yes or no to as much or as little as you’d like to do. Yes to choice, I say.

The other question I was most asked: What age are the guests on board?

On our river cruise, I travelled with guests from a range of different ages, from mid-life to post-retirement. There were couples making new friends with like-minded people; daughters travelling with their mum on her last overseas trip; and girlfriends travelling together but in separate cabins. There is richness in travelling with a mix of different age groups and I certainly felt that on board.
